Özet

Popüler kültür anlatıları, kimlik inşalarının ve politik söylemlerin üretildiği ve dolaşıma sokulduğu başlıca kültürel alanlardan biri hâline gelmiştir. Uzun süre ana akım medyada sınırlı ve tek boyutlu biçimde ele alınan Arap ve Müslüman temsili, Küresel dijital yayın platformlarının yaygınlaşmasıyla birlikte farklı bir görünüm kazanmıştır. Bu makalede, Netflix orijinali Mo dizisinde, Filistin ve Filistinli temsilinin nasıl inşa edildiği araştırılmıştır. Çalışmada, nitel bir yaklaşım benimsenmiş ve dizi, van Dijk’ın eleştirel söylem çözümlemesi yöntemi çerçevesinde makro ve mikro yapısal boyutlar doğrultusunda incelenmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular, dizideki Filistin söyleminin yüzeysel olduğunu, Filistinli karakterlerin temsillerinin Batı-merkezli bir anlatı doğrultusunda yeniden düzenlendiğini işaret etmektedir. Ayrıca araştırma sonucunda dizideki Filistinli karakterler aracılığıyla Amerikan üstünlüğünün vurgulandığı görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda dizide soykırım gerçeğinin görmezden gelinmesi, Amerikan kültürel hegemonyası ve üstünlük söyleminin inşası, dinin medyatik temsiller yoluyla basitleştirilmesi ve yüzeyselleştirilmesi, ötekileştirmenin yeniden üretimi şeklinde dört farklı temaya ulaşılmıştır.

Abstract

Popular culture narratives have become one of the principal cultural arenas in which identity constructions and political discourses are produced and circulated. With the proliferation of global digital streaming platforms, the Palestinian issue, which has long been addressed in a limited and one-dimensional manner in mainstream media, has gained a different form of visibility through popular culture narratives. This article investigates how representations of Palestine and Palestinians are constructed in the Netflix original series Mo. The study adopts a qualitative approach and the series is analyzed using the method of critical discourse analysis of van Dijk within the framework of macro and micro structural dimensions. The findings of the research indicate that the Palestinian discourse in the series is superficial and that the representations of Palestinian characters are reconfigured in line with a Western-centric narrative. Furthermore, the research revealed that American superiority is emphasized through the Palestinian characters in the series. In this context, four main themes are identified: the disregard of the reality of genocide in the series, the construction of American cultural hegemony and superiority discourse, the simplification and superficialization of religion through mediatized representations, and the reproduction of othering.
