THE TRANSLATION OF EUPHEMISTIC WORDS IN MUXTAR AUEZOV’S SHORT STORIES INTO TURKISH IN POINT OF MEANING AND STRUCTURE

Abstract

Together with the dissolution of the Soviet Empire, the problems with regard to translations among Turkic dialects and countries have come out. Although Turkic dialects are related to each other and have similarities, the relations and similarites cause some problems with this regard, too. The translator by translating a text from one dialect into other encounters with some problems with regard to lexicology, syntax, semantics and meaning changes. The main problem encountered with is translating those words that have same structure but different meaning, or vise versa. In additon, some phrases, proverbs, idioms, onomatopoeic words cause a sense of confusion between source dialect and target dialect.In this study, the translations of classical Kazakh writer Muxtar Auezow’s six short stories into Turkish is evaluated. The euphemistic words that taken place in the short stories and handled according to their subjects are analyzed. These are the words that have bad meanings or bad connatations in a socity such as the words whose meanings are related to death and illnesess. Because of this, the signifiers of signified related to these phenomena are met with more appropriate and suitale words or phrases. In addition to this, the issues with regard to euphemism is handled by translating a text from a dialect to another. The rules in translating euphemistic words or pharses will also is determined. In doing this, the place and the importance of euphemism in a literary text and in a society will be explored from different perspectives. In addition, the similarities and differences between Kazakh and Turkish in terms of euphemism and taboo is discussed in detail.

Özet

Sovyetler Birliği’nin dağılmasıyla birlikte Türk dünyasında yer alan dil ve edebiyat alanlarındaki gelişmeler, lehçeler arası çevirilerdeki problemleri de gün ışığına çıkarmıştır. Türk lehçelerinin birbirleriyle olan yakınlık ve benzerlikleri çevirilerde büyük ölçüde kolaylık sağlamasının yanı sıra bazı sıkıntıları da beraberinde getirmiştir. Bir Türk lehçesinden diğerine aktarma yapan çevirmen, kelime hazinesi, söz dizimi, anlam değişmeleri bakımından doğal olarak birtakım sorunlarla karşılaşmaktadır. Bunların başlıcası; yazılışı, söylenişi aynı veya benzer olan söz/sözcüklerin farklı lehçelerde değişik anlam taşıması ve çevirmeni yanlışa sevk edebilmesidir. Ayrıca kalıp sözler, atasözleri, deyimler ve ses taklidi sözcükler gibi dil unsurları da çeviride karşılaşılan zorlukların birkaçıdır.
