An Investigation of Teaching Self-Efficacy Levels of Science Teachers in Relation to Some Variables

Abstract

This study aims to investigate teaching self-efficacy level of science teachers in relation to some variables. The study, in which quantitative research method and relational survey model were used, was conducted with the participation of 501 science teachers in the state middle-schools of Istanbul province selected by using random sampling method throughout the academic year of 2015-2016. In the study, Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale was used as an instrument for collecting data. At the end of the study it has been found that there is a substantive correlation between self-efficacy level of science teachers and the variables of “seniority” and “graduation status” (undergraduate, postgraduate etc.). Moreover, a statistically significant difference has been found between classroom-management factor which is placed as the second one on the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale and the variable of “having a teacher in the family”. No statistically significant difference has been noted between teacher self-efficacy level and the variables of “gender” and “type of the schools where teachers graduated from (undergraduate, college etc.)”.

Özet

Araştırmanın amacı, Fen Bilgisi öğretmenlerinin öğretmenlik öz-yeterlik düzeylerini bazı değişkenler açısından incelemektir. Çalışmada nicel araştırma yöntemi ve ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Çalışma, 2015-2016 akademik yılında İstanbul ilinde faaliyet gösteren devlet Ortaokullarında görev yapan 501 Fen Bilgisi öğretmeni ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Öğretmen Öz-Yeterlik Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda, Fen Bilgisi öğretmenlerinin öğretmen öz-yeterlik düzeyleri ile kıdem ve mezuniyet düzeyine (lisans/lisansüstü) göre farklılık göstermektedir. Bunun yanı sıra cinsiyet ve mezun olunan fakülte türü açısından anlamlı bir farklılık tespit edilmemiştir.
