Abstract
Education and training practices received attention from the government in the early Republican era so as to build a new national identity. Challenges arose in helping people adopt the reforms and in building a common cultural heritage because the schooling rates were low and it was hard to contact public circles who were not part of formal education. As a result, the need for a systematic adult education structure became obvious and People’s Houses were established all around the country. People’s Houses were divided into 9 different areas of operation and had one separate branch for areas such as language, history, literature, fine arts, sports, theatre etc. The current study explores People’s Houses, which were considered to be formal educational institutions actively operating between 1932 and 1951, in relation to their activities in the area of history education, construction of historical consciousness and/or national identity. In this regard, conferences on history were analyzed. The analyses showed that several conferences were held regarding the origins of Turks, greatness of the Turkish history, National War of Independence, Ataturk’s Principles and Reforms. These conferences attempted to build historical consciousness. They also aimed to develop a sense of responsibility in terms of the need to preserve and defend Ataturk’s principles and reforms. Besides, within the framework of the language and history understanding of the time, it was aimed to reach a consensus as to the origins, language and history of Turks and to build a sense of continuity by means of distant past narratives on Turkishness. Furthermore, considering the conditions of the respective era, the fact that central importance was attached to the education of adults who were not part of formal education system has once again proved that identity and education are directly linked to each other. Within this context, infusion of the historical perspective of the time into people by means of a range of conferences has been considered an important practice for the teaching of history
