Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reveal how the command "read" repeated in the first and third verses of Surah Alaq was interpreted in terms of Islamic educational thought in the classical age of Islam. In this study, which was conducted as a qualitative research based on document analysis, all tafsir works that could be accessed until the end of the 8th/14th century, regardless of genre or school, were included in the sample. It is noteworthy that the command to read in these verses does not take any object; it does not make a binding judgement on who should read what. This situation opened the door for the commentators to ask the questions "Who is the addressee of the command to read and what constitutes its subject?". Māturīdī and Ibn Taymiyyah, based on the absolute command to read, state that this address covers "everyone", while al-Kirmānī and al-Bayzāwī state that it covers "everything". The first commandment, which does not bring a record to the questions "For whom is knowledge for?" and "What is its subject matter?", has brought the record "bismi rabbik" to the question "How and why is knowledge done?". In their interpretations based on this statement, the commentators have concluded that reading should begin by mentioning the name of Allah, reading by asking for His help, and reading for the sake of Allah.
