THE ADANA DIALECT AND VOICE FEATURES IN ORHAN KEMAL’S NOVELS AND STORIES

Abstract

Orhan Kemal who is from Adana deals with the life conditions of the people living in the district of Adana in his works. Through the characters of his novels and stories, he expresses the features of Adana voice and dialect. All the tagged words used in his novels and stories reveal the features of Adana voice and dialect. The features are palatal, labial harmony or disharmony in voiced and labialization and crasis as voicing events. The other voicing features in consonants can be categorised as follows: vocalization, devoicing, spirantisation, fluency, nasalisation, fusing, contraction, consonant analogy, sonarisation, loss of voicedness differentiation, degemination, and assimilation. We have also found out that there are striking differences in suffixes. The main ones are the first person plural suffix as –k, the first person optative as –(y)im/ym, but genitive suffix appears as n> y, then it changes into ñ>y. Through progressive assimilation, the plural ending becomes +nar and the present tense suffix is –yo. Through regressive assimilation, the means suffix +IAn becomes +nAn and +lI4k turns into +nI4k through progressive assimilation. Furthermore, future tense second person plural ending is –AcAn and simple present tense second person becomes positive suffix –I4n and negative suffix is used as –mAn. Another striking point Kemal’s works is that the optative plural first person appears as +(y)Ak Orhan Kemal who is from Adana deals with the life conditions of the people living in the district of Adana in his works. The author who lived between 1914-1970 produced works in 1960s which were very popular among Turkish people. The master who was a real public figure had a difficult life. His works cover everybody’s life and their difficulties from the all walks of life. Kemal’s works depict the problems and lives of the labourers in Çukurova fields, at the factories, those who migrate abroad for work and the difficulties faced by the people living the slumps and suburbs by retaining the characteristics and beauty of the local language and sayings. The features are palatal, labial harmony or disharmony in voiced and labialization and crasis as voicing events. “alev>alaf, cahil>cahal, faiz>fayız, haber>habar, hatice>hatça, kardeş>kardaş, kıymetli>kıymatlı, kuvvet>kuvvat, kuvat, lira>lire, mektup>mektüp, nusret>nusrat, otobüs>otobos, para>pere, sahip>sahap, şahit>şahat, tahin>tahan, vakit>vakıt” , these examples are palatal harmony formed by or with progressive assimilation. “efsuncu>afsuncu, elma>alma, esvaplı>aspaplı, bugün>böün, sigara>cağra, cara, cıgara, tane>dene, aferin>eferin, ahmet>ehmed, asker>esger, helva>havla, merhaba> maraba, sivas>suvaz” , these examples are palatal harmony formed by or with regressive assimilation. “Avrıpa, çamırdalar, gavır, kabıklısını, pambık, pambıktır, sabın, tohtur” , these examples are labial harmony formed by or with progressive assimilation. “bürgün, cuvap, uruspu” , these examples are labial harmony formed by or with regressive assimilation. “Ağzıböyükler, bösbüyük, dövletimize, üşüyün, bubanın, dolduruyum mu, oluyum, bürgün, çütlüğe, düzüne, mühümsemezler, müş, fonteziyeye, fürsat, muçağı, sakatluk, mülür, müpmeğin, ölüyüm, öpüyüm, nahuye” are the examples of labialization. “Ağlarmola, mustafendi, n' örüyor, n’olacak, n’örecem, n’örek, neştersen, nöördün” are the examples of crasis. The other voicing features in consonants can be categorised as follows: vocalization, devoicing, fusing (ex. ağbi, amet, bi, epi, esik, gāli, kâadı, köpoolları, mamıd, mapıs, mapisane, mapusa, memed, şuşârından, töbe, vā, vudu, yomiye), contraction (ex. ābiy, alacam, bēm, cara, defolacam, deel, delānnı, delannıydı, delânni, dilim, edecem, getmiyecem, gidecem, kapatmıyacam, kehtane, kovacam, masabe, masebeciler, mukat, saa, salacam, silecem, uşasın, verecez, yatıracam), consonant analogies like spirantisation (ex. ahılsız, bahsan, cıhardılar, cızırdahlıydı, humarcılık, korhtun, pohlu, tohtor, vahıt, yassah, yoh, façamız, hırhızlık), fluency (ex. eymeğini, kayfaltıya, kayfe, tayın, mahanaynan, sağlıyı) and nasalisation (ex. anşa). Loss of voicedness (ex. candarma, cenderme, cilet), differentiation (ex. barnağındaki, mefat, abıkat), degemination (ex. deyim, uyumayım, yamayım), assimilation and metathesis (ex. cılbağı, havla, kaphe, kehtane, melmeket, tefriğ, ürya, burgul) are the other voicing features in consonants. The study deals with kinds of vocalization. First, vocalization in the first letter of the word. “gafa, ganun, gapında, garıcığım, gaşık, gaygu, gendi, gıldı, gıvradiym, gız, gocamanlığına, gomser, gravatımı, gurbannarın, güççük, daktığım, dartmıyor, daş, datlıysa, davşanın, dene, depe, dezze, dırnak, dutacan, duz, duzzağı, batözlerin, cıhardılar, cılbağı, zabah, zırtlan, vilispit” are the examples of this kind. Second, vocalization in the word. “alagası, angara, esgerlik, ilagedar, yoğsa, akdarıldı, avgan, evendi, havta, mustuva, cılbağı” are the examples of this kind. Third, vocalization in the last letter of the word. “Yonuz” is the example of this kind. Fourth, vocalization during the process of presufixes or suffixes. “atacağdın, çalışmıyacağmış, diyeceğdim, fırlayacağmış, göndereceğdin, kapadacağım, n' olacağsa, sağlıcağnan, tutacağmış, vereceğdin, cumhurireizine, parizden, suvaz, elledir, kapadıyon, söyledecen, yudabilene” are the examples of this kind. Fifth, voiced suffixes. “değişdirsin, kesdirrim, yanıldır, alışganlığı, eşgin, kavuşdursun, pişgin” are the examples of this kind. Sixth, vocalization with connection. “kulağasma” is the example of this kind. And the study deals with two kinds of devoicing. “furacağımı, pıravo, pindik, pohunu, ta, tohtor” are the examples of devoicing in the first letter of the word. “haççacı, aptasaneye, ayakkaplarıma, ip

Adanalı olan ve eserlerinde çoğunlukla Adana insanının yaşamına yer veren Orhan Kemal, roman ve hikâyelerinde karakterleri aracılığıyla Adana ağzı özelliklerine yer vermiştir. 1914-1970 yılları arasında yaşamış olan yazar, 60'lı yıllarda verdiği eserlerle Türk toplumunun beğenisini toplamıştır. Çukurova'da çalışan ırgatların ve fabrika işçilerinin sorunlarını, gurbete çalışmaya giden işçilerin ve kenar mahalle insanlarının hayatlarını anlatırken ağız özeliklerini muhafaza etmiştir. Tüm roman ve hikâyelerinden fişlenen kelimelerde Adana ağzının ses özellikleri tespit edilmiştir. Ünlülerde damak ve dudak uyumu/uyumsuzluğu, dudaklılaşma, geçişme, gibi ses olaylarıyla birlikte ve ünsüzlerde ötümlüleşme, ötümsüzleşme, sızıcılaşma, akıcılaşma, benzetmeleri, süreksizleşme, benzeşmezlik, göçüşme, hece tekleşmesi, hece kaynaşması gibi ses olayları göze çarpmaktadır. Eklerde de dikkat çekici farklılıklara rastlanmıştır. Bunların başlıcaları. zamir kökenli çokluk I. kişi ekinin -k şeklinde, istek kipi teklik I. kişinin -(y)im/ym şeklinde olması, ilgi durumu ekinde ñ>y, n>y değişmesi, çokluk ekinin ilerleyici benzetme yoluyla +nar, şimdiki zaman ekinin -yo, +lAn vasıta ekinin gerileyici benzetme yoluyla +nAn, +lI4k ekinin ilerleyici benzetme yoluyla +nI4k şeklinde olmasıdır. Bunlarla birlikte, gelecek zaman II. teklik kişi çekiminin -AcAn, geniş zaman II. teklik kişi olumlu çekiminin -I4n, olumsuz çekiminin -mAn şeklinde kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Ayrıca eserlerde istek kipi çokluk I. kişi çekiminde +(y)Ak biçiminin işlek olduğu önemli bir özellik olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Orhan Kemal eserlerinde Adana ağzı özelliklerini yansıtarak, halk dilinin ve Türkçenin zenginliğini ortaya koymuştur
