Black and White Photography as A Contemporary Visual Language

Abstract

Black and white is one of the two basic techniques in modern photography. Looking at the photographic tradition today, it is seen that the black and white style has resurfaced in recent years from the depths of the past. This study focuses on creative practices produced in the context of the reinterpretation of black and white photography, which was forgotten with the invention of color film, from a postmodernist perspective. The main problem addressed in the study is the increasing similarities between millions of photographs shared in the age of social media and the similarities between the works awarded in photography competitions. In this context, the subject of the study is how black and white photography is reclaimed by master artists in the contemporary period by overcoming the problems of originality. Within the scope of the qualitative research method, books, journals, web pages and social media posts, short films, photo albums and exhibitions were analyzed. Among the findings, documents where the works were exhibited in multiple exhibitions were included in order to look at the imagination of the artists from a wide perspective. In the study, the artists whose practices are given as examples in terms of creativity are analyzed under headings such as documentarism, storytelling, technical mastery, use of light and shadow, emotional expressionism, minimalism and timelessness. The style and style of the artists were evaluated according to common criteria in the art of photography such as composition, light, subject expression and technical applications. This study aims to examine how black and white photography has been reclaimed as a visual language in contemporary photography in the hands of creative thoughts and ideas, and to inspire photographers who are not successful enough in reflecting their theoretical knowledge to their photographs and who have difficulty in creativity in terms of application methods and working styles. As a result, black and white photography offers a richness that transcends time, language and culture and can tell emotional stories that continue to have an impact across generations. The works of the masters of this technique remind us of the magic, power and enduring relevance of black-and-white photography in today's world, while reminding us that it offers effective imaginative narrative possibilities.

Siyah-beyaz, modern fotoğrafçılıktaki iki temel teknikten biridir. Günümüzde fotograf geleneğine bakıldığında siyah beyaz biçemin geçmişin derinliğinden son yıllarda tekrar yüzeye çıktığı görülmektedir. Bu çalışma, renkli filmlerin icadıyla unutulan siyah beyaz fotoğrafın, postmodernist bir bakış açısıyla yeniden yorumlanması bağlamında üretilen yaratıcı uygulamalara odaklanmıştır. Çalışmada ele alınan ana sorun sosyal medya çağında paylaşılan milyonlarca fotoğrafın arasındaki benzerliklerin artması ve fotoğraf yarışmalarında ödül alan eserlerin birbirine benzemesidir. Bu bağlamda çalışmanın konusu, siyah beyaz fotoğrafın çağdaş dönemde usta sanatçılar tarafından özgünlük sorunları aşılarak yeniden nasıl sahiplenildiğidir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kapsamında kaynak taraması yapılarak kitap, dergi, web sayfaları ve sosyal medya gönderileri, kısa film, fotoğraf albümü ve sergiler incelenmiştir. İncelemede çıkan buluntular arasından sanatçıların imgelemlerine geniş bir perspektiften bakabilmek için yapıtların çoklu olarak sergilendiği belgelere yer verilmiştir. Çalışmada yaratıcılık açısından uygulamaları örnek olarak verilen sanatçılar belgeselcilik, hikâye anlatıclığı, teknik ustalık, ışık ve gölge kullanımı, duygusal dışavurumculuk, minimalizm, zamansızlık gibi başlıklar altında incelenmiştir. Sanatçıların izdem ve biçemleri kompozisyon, ışık, konu anlatımı, teknik uygulamalar gibi fotoğraf sanatındaki ortak kriterlere göre değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışma, siyah beyaz fotoğrafın yaratıcı düşünce ve fikirlerin elinde çağdaş fotoğrafta bir görsel dil olarak nasıl yeniden sahiplenildiğini ele alırken teorik bilgisini fotoğraflarına yansıtmada yeteri kadar başarılı olamayan ve yaratıcılıkta zorlanan fotoğrafçılara uygulama yöntemleri ve çalışma biçemleri açısından ilham vermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Sonuç olarak siyah beyaz fotoğraf, zamanı, dili ve kültürü aşan bir zenginlik sunarak nesiller boyunca etkisi devam eden duygusal hikâyeler anlatabilmektedir. Bu tekniği sahiplenen ustaların çalışmaları bize siyah-beyaz fotoğrafın büyüsünü, gücünü ve günümüz dünyasındaki kalıcı geçerliliğini hatırlatırken, etkin imgesel anlatı olanakları sunduğunu hatırlatmaktadır.
