CINEMA AESTHETICS: REALITY AND TRUTH

Abstract

This study aimed to examine Selçuk Ulutaş's work titled “Cinema Aesthetics: Reality and Truth” published in 2017. The fact that the academic discussions on this subject in the field of cinema are insufficient and those available in the literature were found to have mainly focused on the stylistic use of cinema-specific tools makes the contribution of this book to the field more important. This study, which examines the aesthetics of cinema in the context of aesthetic philosophy focusing on the analysis of the dimension of emotion, allows discussions in th area filling in the relevant gap in the Turkish literature on an academic basis. Examining the emotion produced by the work of art within the framework of the concept of ‘affect’, this work has focused on the establishment of the connections between artistic reality and emotion. The book, “Cinema Aesthetics: Reality and Truth” written by Ulutaş handles cinema films from the modern aesthetics phylosophy perspective as well as attempt to add a new interpretation and explore the tension between truth and reality based on the connections of aesthetic objects with the information. From this point of view, the work is capable of creating a model for researchers who want to study the aesthetics of cinema, other than the stylistic use of cinemaspecific tools.

Özet

Bu çalışmada; Selçuk Ulutaş’ın 2017 yılında yayınlanan “Sinema Estetiği: Gerçeklik ve Hakikat” isimli çalışmasının irdelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Sinema araştırmaları alanında konuya ilişkin akademik tartışmalarının yetersiz ve ağırlıklı olarak sinemaya özgü araçların biçemsel kullanımı üzerine odaklanmış olması, kitabın sinema estetiği alanındaki çalışmalara yaptığı katkıyı daha önemli hale getirmektedir. Sinema estetiğini, estetik felsefesi bağlamında duygu boyutunun çözümlenmesine odaklanarak inceleyen çalışma Türkçe literatürde eksik kalan bir alanın akademik zeminde tartışılmasına olanak sağlamaktadır. Sanat eseri tarafından üretilen duyguyu, ‘Duygulam (affect)’ kavramı çerçevesinde inceleyen eser, sanatsal gerçeklik ile duygu arasındaki bağlantıların kurulmasına odaklanmıştır. Bu yönüyle Ulutaş’ın kaleme aldığı “Sinema Estetiği: Gerçeklik ve Hakikat” kitabı, sanat eseri olarak sinema filmlerine modern estetik felsefesi penceresinden bakarken yeni bir yorum kazandırma arayışı ve estetik nesnelerin bilgi ile bağlantıları üzerinden hakikat ve gerçeklik arasındaki gerilimi keşfetmeye yönelik bir çabanın eseridir. Bu açıdan eser sinema estetiğini, sinemaya özgü araçların biçemsel kullanımı dışında incelemek isteyecek araştırmacılara bir model oluşturabilecek niteliktedir.
