An Experıment on Colour Changes from Halid Ziya Uşaklıgıl: Bukalemun-I Kimya”

Abstract
Since the Tanzimat period, under the influence of the West, with the production of novels, stories, and theatres, theauthors of the period had not remained limited to writing literary genres but also tried to show their knowledge by writing workson natural and logic sciences. One of these authors was Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil, one of the important representatives of Turkishliterature of the Servet-i Fünun period, who studied in different fields such as mathematics, chemistry and physiognomy. Hisknowledge of languages such as French and Greek, his reading of French and Greek sources, and his interest in science andmathematics led Uşaklıgil to write scientific works. “Bukalemun-ı Kimya”, a work of chemistry he prepared by observing thecolour changes using various chemical materials, is one of the scientific works written in this context. This study introduces HalidZiya’s work called “Bukalemun-ı Kimya”, and briefly mentions the language and turn of expressions of the author by referring tothe title of experiments in the work. In addition, the study discusses a glossary, and finally has a few sections from the translatedtext. In this context, this paper has 273 terms, including 224 chemistry terms and 49 terms in scientific fields such as mathematics,color and botany, and it evaluates all of these terms with their meanings.

Tanzimat döneminden itibaren Batı etkisinde kalınarak roman, hikâye, tiyatro gibi ürünlerin verilmeyebaşlanmasıyla birlikte dönemin yazarları edebî türleri kaleme almakla sınırlı kalmamış, aynı zamanda doğa ve mantıkbilimlerine yönelik eserler de kaleme alarak sahip oldukları bilgi birikimini göstermeye çalışmışlardır. Bu yazarlardanbiri de matematik, kimya, fizyonomi gibi farklı alanlarda çalışmaları olan, Servet-i Fünûn dönemi Türk edebiyatınınönemli temsilcilerinden Hâlid Ziyâ Uşaklıgil’dir. Fransızca, Yunanca gibi dillere hâkim olması, bunun yanında Fransızve Yunan kaynaklarını okuması, fen ve matematiğe olan ilgisi Uşaklıgil’i bilimsel eserler yazmaya yönlendirmiştir. Çeşitlikimyasal malzemelerin kullanımıyla renk değişimlerini gözlemleyerek hazırladığı bir kimya eseri olan “Bukalemun-ıKimya” bu bağlamda yazılmış bilimsel eserlerden biridir. Bu çalışmada Hâlid Ziyâ’nın “Bukalemun-ı Kimya” adlı eseritanıtılmış, eserde geçen deney başlıklarına değinilerek yazarın dili ve üslubundan kısaca bahsedilmiştir. Ayrıca eserinterim varlığı ele alınmış ve çalışmanın sonuna çeviri yazıdan birkaç bölüm eklenmiştir. Bu bağlamda, çalışmada toplam223 kimya terimi ve 49 matematik, renk, botanik gibi bilimsel alanlarda terimler olmak üzere 272 terim tespit edilmişve bu terimlerin hepsi anlamlarıyla verilmiştir.
