A RESEARCH ON THE SOURCES OF STRESS ENCOUNTERED BY SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS: THE CASE OF HATAY

ORTAOKUL ÖĞRETMENLERİNİN OKULDA KARŞILAŞTIKLARI STRES KAYNAKLARI ÜZERİNE BİR ARAŞTIRMA: HATAY ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the sources of stress faced by secondary school teachers and to reveal the teachers’ expectations from school administrators. In this study, the method of qualitative research was used and the data were obtained by conducting the interview. The study group of this research consists of 12 secondary school teachers, 6 male and 6 female teachers working in Hatay Yayladağı Turfanda Secondary School, Atatürk Secondary School, and Çatbaşı Secondary School. The teachers working at those schools were divided into three categories such as low, medium, and high levels regarding the quality of education, the education level of the place, economic income, and physical conditions. The results of this study showed that teachers are exposed to stress in more than one area, which negatively affected their performance.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı; ortaokul öğretmenlerinin okulda karşılaştıkları stres kaynaklarını tespit etmek ve öğretmenlerin okul idarecilerinden beklentilerini ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmış, veriler mülakat tekniği ile elde edilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Hatay Yayladağı Turfanda Ortaokulu, Atatürk Ortaokulu ve Çatbaşı Ortaokulu’nda görevli 6 kadın 6 erkek öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Öğretmenlerin hizmet verdiği okullar, eğitim kalitesi, bulunduğu yerin eğitim seviyesi, ekonomik gelir ve fiziki koşulları göz önünde bulundurularak düşük, orta ve yüksek seviye olmak üzere üç kategoriye ayrılmıştır. Bulgular, öğretmenlerin birden fazla alanda strese maruz kaldıklarını, bu durumun performanslarına olumsuz etki ettiğini açık şekilde ortaya koymuştur.
