Empirical Analysis of the Relationship between the Exchange Rate and Coronavirus Epidemic: The Case of Turkey

Abstract
Coronavirus, which is a global epidemic, first appeared in China and has influenced the whole world. Even the most developed countries of the world are seen to be affected by this epidemic. Coronavirus causes social and economic life to pause and fluctuations in financial markets in the globalizing world economy. This study aims to investigate the relationship between epidemic and exchange rate with daily data between 27.03.2020-15.05.2020. As a result of this research conducted with the time series method, a long-term relationship was found between the variables. In causality tests, causality was found between the exchange rate and death, case, and the number of people recovered. The findings are that there is a relationship between the epidemic and the exchange rate.
Özet
Küresel bir salgın hastalık olan korona virüs ilk olarak Çin’de ortaya çıkmış ve tüm dünyayı etkisi altına almış bulunmaktadır. Dünyanın en gelişmiş ülkeleri dahi bu salgından fazlaca etkilendikleri görülmektedir. Korona virüs küreselleşen dünya ekonomisinde sosyal ve ekonomik hayatın duraklamasına, finansal piyasalarda dalgalanmaların görülmesine neden olmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, yaşanan salgın ile döviz kuru arasındaki ilişkiyi 27.03.2020-15.05.2020 tarihleri arasındaki günlük verilerle araştırmaktır. Zaman serisi yöntemiyle yapılan bu araştırma sonucunda değişkenler arasında uzun dönemli bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Nedensellik testlerinde ise döviz kuru ile vefat, vaka ve iyileşen sayısı arasından nedensellik bulunmuştur. Elde edilen bulgular, salgın ile döviz kuru arasında ilişki olduğu yönündedir.
