Abstract
The îreaîabiîity of a paper miîî wastewater by adsorption and activaîed sîudgemethods \vas investigaîed. Alîhough a wastewater treatmenî faciîity, which ~works 'with coaguîationfloccvlalionmethocf, exists at this papermiîî, îtdoes nol \vork satisfactoriîy toreduce COD and BOD)under îhe allo\vabîe vaîves ofthe Turkish Water Polîuîion Control Regulaîion. First, adsorpsion wUhp(rwdered acîivaîed carbon experiments . were done. Since the required reduction ofCOD could notbeen achiaved, coagvlation-jîocculütion wilh alum followed by adsorpsion expenments 'wereconducled. This was aho not satisfacîory. Finaîly, activated sludge method vvas applied. it was' foundîhaî when the wastewater is not heavily polîuîed (COD<600 mg/l) activated sludge treatmenl issufffdent alone, but far heavity polîuted samples it mvsî be followed by an aîum coagulationftoccuîaîionstep.
