Abstract

In this research, a series of characterization studies were carried out on Ayazini and Seydilertuffs which are used as building stones around Afyonkarahisar. Petrographic-mineralogical(polarizing microscope, XRD), chemical analysis, porosity distribution and physico-mechanicalproperties of the mentioned rocks have been determined. Water is an important factor in theweathering of natural building stones. The salt solutions carried with the water move through thebuilding blocks through capillary cracks and due to evaporation salt crystals form in the cracksand spaces. These formations cause the rocks to degrade. Experimental studies were conductedwith sodium sulphate decahydrate solution in order to determine the resistance of the rocks to thesalt crystallization. Disintegration properties of tuffs due to salt crystallization were determinedby weight loss calculation, uniaxial compressive strength and ultrasonic velocity measurements.Seydiler tuffs have been determined to be more resistant to salt crystallization while Ayazini tuffswhich have higher porosity amount are observed to be decomposed.
