Determining the Relationship between Motivation and Emotional Labor

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of academicians' motivation and dimensions, namely internal and external motivations, on emotional labor sub dimensions which as expression of natural felt emotions, deep acting and surface acting. The sample of the research consists of academicians with various titles working at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University. The research data were gathered through an online questionnaire and the sample size was determined as 152. In the model of the research, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation were considered as independent variables, emotional labor and its sub dimensions as dependent variables. Simple linear regression analysis was used to test the model developed in the research and the hypotheses based on this model. As a result of the analysis of the data, it was observed that motivation had a significant and positive effect on natural emotions and a significant and negative effect on surface acting. However, it was determined that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation had a significant and positive effect on natural emotions. In addition, it has been determined that intrinsic motivation has a significant and negative effect on surface acting.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı akademisyenlerin motivasyon ve boyutları olan içsel ve dışsal motivasyonlarının duygusal emek boyutları olan derinden rol yapma, yüzeysel rol yapma ve doğal duygular üzerindeki etkilerini belirlemektir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit Üniversitesi’nde görev yapmakta olan çeşitli unvanlara sahip akademisyenler oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma verileri online anket yoluyla toplanmış olup örneklem büyüklüğü 152 olarak tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmanın modelinde içsel ve dışsal motivasyon bağımsız değişkenler, duygusal emek boyutları bağımlı değişken olarak ele alınmıştır. Araştırmada geliştirilen modelin ve bu modele dayanan hipotezlerin test edilmesi için basit doğrusal regresyon analizinden faydalanılmıştır. Verilerin analizi sonucunda motivasyonun doğal duygular üzerinde pozitif ve anlamlı etkisi ve yüzeysel rol yapma üzerinde ise negatif ve anlamlı etkisi olduğu gözlenmiştir. Bununla birlikte içsel ve dışsal motivasyonun doğal duygular üzerinde anlamlı ve pozitif etkisinin olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca içsel motivasyonun yüzeysel rol yapma üzerinde anlamlı ve negatif etkisi olduğu saptanmıştır.
