Learning Styles of Middle School Students in İstanbul in terms of Grade Levels

Abstract

It is of great importance to know the learning styles and the characteristics of the students, in terms of developing their learning skills and eliminating the learning difficulties. Every student has different learning styles apart from each other. While planning an efficient learning, taking the individual learning characteristics of the students into consideration is required. Defining the learning styles of the students facilitates their learning by helping to know the differences in the process of learning, taking precautions in order to improve the weaknesses of the students by identifying their strengths and weaknesses, finding faster solutions on the problems encountered, developing different learning methods which will affect the students’ learning in a positive way and preparing different learning settings. This research was done to identify the learning styles of the middle school students in terms of grade levels. Kolb Learning Style Inventory (ÖSE / LSI), which defines learning styles in four different categories; as accommodator, converger, diverger and assimilator was used as a data collection tool. The inventory, has been applied to 247 students studying in a state middle school of the Ministry of Education in the province of İstanbul during 2021-2022 academic year. The findings obtained as a result of the study have shown that the students in 5th, 6th and 8th grades to have “Assimilator” and in 7th grades “Converger” learning styles respectively. According to the conclusion reached at the end of the research, it was identified that the students have “Assimilator” learning style the most and it was concluded that the teachers should develop different methods by considering different learning styles while they are preparing the learning settings.

Özet

Öğrenenlerin öğrenme stillerinin belirlenmesi, öğrenme sürecindeki farklılıklarının bilinmesine, öğrencilerin güçlü ve güçsüz oldukları taraflarının belirlenerek güçsüz oldukları taraflarının güçlendirilmesi için tedbirler alınmasına, karşılaştıkları problemlerde daha hızlı çözüm üretmelerine, öğrencilerin başarılarını olumlu yönde etkileyecek farklı öğrenme metotlarının geliştirilmesine ve öğrenme ortamlarının hazırlanmasına yardımcı olarak öğrenmelerini kolaylaştırır. Bu araştırma ortaokul öğrencilerinin öğrenme stillerini öğrenim gördükleri sınıf düzeyleri bakımından belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmada veriler toplanırken öğrenme stillerini; yerleştiren, değiştiren, ayrıştıran ve özümseyen olmak üzere dört türde açıklayan Kolb Öğrenme Stili Envanteri (ÖSE) kullanılmıştır. Envanter, 2021-2022 eğitim öğretim yılında İstanbul ilinde Milli Eğitim Bakanlığına bağlı bir ortaokulda öğrenim gören 247 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda elde edilen bulgular öğrencilerin öğrenme stillerinin sırasıyla 5., 6. ve 8. sınıflarda “Özümseyen”, 7. sınıflarda ise “Değiştiren” stile sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Araştırma sonucunda ulaşılan sonuçlara göre, öğrencilerin daha çok “Özümseyen” öğrenme stiline sahip olduklarını tespit edilmiş ve öğretmenlerin öğrenme ortamlarını hazırlarken farklı öğrenme stillerini göz önüne alarak farklı metotlar geliştirmeleri gerektiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
