The Effects of Corporate Governance on The Financial Performance of European Banks

Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of corporate governance quality of European countries on banking performance. For this purpose, the data of banks operating in 25 European countries were used. As the analysis period, the 10-year period between 2011 and 2020 was examined. In the study, the return on assets ratio (ROA) was used as the dependent variable representing the banking performance indicator. The corporate governance index (WGI) published by the World Bank was used as an independent variable in the analysis. In addition, gross domestic product and inflation, which are frequently used in the literature, were included in the analysis as control variables. Considering the number of countries and the time series used in the analysis, the System Generalized Moments Method (SGMM) was preferred. According to the findings obtained in the analysis, the quality of corporate governance positively affects the performance of banks in 22 European countries.

Çalışmanın amacı, Avrupa ülkelerinin kurumsal yönetişim kalitelerinin bankacılık performansına etkisini araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla 25 Avrupa ülkesinde faaliyet gösteren bankaların verileri kullanılmıştır. Analiz dönemi olarak 2011 ile 2020 yılları arası 10 yıllık dönem incelenmiştir. Çalışmada bağımlı değişken olarak bankacılık performans göstergesini temsilen aktif karlılığı oranı (ROA) kullanılmıştır. Dünya Bankasının yayınladığı kurumsal yönetişim endeksi (WGI) analizde bağımsız değişken olarak kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca literatürde sıklıkla kullanılan gayri safi yurt içi hasıla ve enflasyon’ da kontrol değişkenleri olarak analize dahil edilmiştir. Analizde ülke sayısı ve kullanılan zaman serisi göz önünde bulundurularak Sistem Genelleştirilmiş Momentler Yöntemi (SGMM) tercih edilmiştir. Analizde elde edilen bulgulara göre 22 Avrupa ülkesinde, kurumsal yönetişim kalitesi bankaların performansını olumlu yönde etkilemektedir.
