A Mixed Study on the Differentiation of Perception of God in Psychological Health and Coping Styles in Cancer Patients

Abstract

Aim: The incidence of cancer is increasing all over the world. Health authorities around the world have focused on the research and development of early diagnosis and treatment to cope with cancer. However, there is a need for studies investigating the effects of the emotions and behaviors formed by the perception of illness in cancer patients on this process. The aim of this research is to see how the perception of God and psychological health of cancer patients differentiate their coping processes. Subject Method: Among the patients who applied to Ankara City Hospital Oncology Tower for treatment, 40 volunteers were included in the study. Voluntary Consent Form was read to the participants of the study or their consent was obtained by reading them and the Personal Information Form was filled. In the research, Brief Symptom Inventory and God Perception scales were used as quantitative data collection tools, in-depth interviews were conducted with patients as qualitative data collection tools, and the Explanatory Sequential Mixed Method was used. The result was obtained by establishing a connection with the qualitative results obtained from the quantitative data. Results: As a result of the analysis, patients with a love-oriented God perception had lower depression, anxiety, negative self, and hostility scores, and these patients used positive religious coping methods. Patients with a fear-oriented perception of God have higher depression, anxiety, negative self, and hostility scores, and these patients use negative religious coping methods. Conclusion: In the study, it was observed that the level of God perception of cancer patients was related to their psychological health, and this link differentiated the coping styles of the patients.

Özet

Amaç: Kanser hastalığının görülme sıklığı tüm dünyada arttığı görülmektedir. Dünyada sağlık otoriteleri kanserle başetmek için erken tanı ve tedavinin araştırılmasına ve geliştirilmesine odaklanmışlardır. Bununla birlikte kanser hastalarında oluşan hastalık algısının oluşturduğu duygu ve davranışların bu sürece olan etkilerini araştıran çalışmalara ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu araştımanın amacı, Kanser hastalarında Tanrı algısının ve psikolojik sağlıklarının baş etme süreçlerini nasıl farklılaştırdığını görmektir. Örneklem ve Yöntem: Ankara Şehir Hastanesi Onkoloji Kulesi’ ne tedavi için başvuran hastalardan araştırmaya katılmayı gönüllü 40 kişi araştırmaya alınmıştır. Araştırmaya katılanlara Gönüllü Onam Formu okutularak ya da okunarak onayları alınmış ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu doldurulmuştur. Araştırmada nicel veri toplama aracı olarak Kısa Semptom Envanteri ile Tanrı Algısı ölçekleri ile nitel veri toplama aracı olarak hastalarla derinlemesine mülakat yapılmış ve Açıklayıcı Sıralı Karma Yöntem kullanılmıştır. Nicel verilerden elde edilen nitel sonuçlarla bağlantı kurularak sonuç elde edilmiştir. Bulgular: Yapılan analizler sonucunda, Sevgi yönelimli Tanrı algısına sahip hastaların depresyon, anksiyete, olumsuz benlik, hostilite puanları daha düşüktür ve bu hastalar olumlu dini baş etme yöntemi kullanmaktadırlar. Korku yönelimli Tanrı algısına sahip hastaların depresyon, anksiyete, olumsuz benlik, hostilite puanları daha yüksektir ve bu hastalar olumsuz dini baş etme yöntemi kullanmaktadırlar. Sonuç: Araştırmada, kanser hastalarının Tanrı algısı düzeyleri ile psikolojik sağlıklarının bağlantılı olduğu, bu bağlantının hastaların baş etme biçimlerini farklılaştırdığı görülmüştür.
