A REVIEW ON THE TRANSFER OF SPACE EXPERIENCE THROUGH ART: DO HO SUH

SANAT ARACILIĞIYLA MEKAN DENEYİMİNİN AKTARIMI ÜZERİNE BİR İNCELEME: DO HO SUH

Abstract

Beyond emotion and thought, art is the most creative way in which experience is conveyed. The transfer of the sensory dimension of spaces recorded in memory and whose existence does not continue also becomes possible through art. This study evaluates the reconstruction of the space through art from the perspective of the artist Do ho Suh. The artist critically deals with the reconstruction of memory and experience in the context of body-space-art. As a quest for the ‘house ‘ he longed for, Do ho Suh reconstructs the descriptions of the spaces in his memory in the exhibition spaces. Thanks to this construction, the space experienced by the artist in the past can also be seen and experienced for the individuals involved in the exhibition. In this context, the artist’s presenting the experience of space as a work of art also helps to comprehend the ontological existence of the space through art. The aim of the study is to analyze the works of the artist and the representations of space in these works, and to question the effect of the absence of space through these analyses. In the study, visual and literary sources of the artist’s works were reached by document review method, and theoretical approaches related to art and space were used in the interpretation of the findings.

Özet

Sanat duygu ve düşüncenin ötesinde, deneyimin aktarıldığı en yaratıcı yoldur. Bellekte kaydedilen ve varlığını devam ettirmeyen mekanların duyusal boyutunun aktarımı da sanat aracılığıyla mümkün hale gelir. Yapılan bu çalışma, mekanın sanat aracılığıyla yeniden inşasını sanatçı Do ho Suh’un perspektifinden değerlendirmektedir. Sanatçı beden- mekan- sanat bağlamında, bellek ve deneyimin yeniden inşasını eleştirel bir yaklaşımla ele almaktadır. Do ho Suh, özlemini çektiği ‘ev’in bir arayışı olarak belleğindeki mekanların betimlerini sergi alanlarında yeniden inşa etmektedir. Bu inşa sayesinde geçmişte sanatçının deneyimlediği mekan, sergiye dahil olan bireyler için de görünebilir ve deneyimlenebilir durumdadır. Bu bağlamda sanatçının mekan deneyimini bir sanat eseri olarak sunuyor olması, mekanın ontolojik varlığının sanat aracılığıyla kavranmasına da yardımcı olmaktadır. Yapılan çalışmanın amacı sanatçıya ait eserler ve bu eserlerdeki mekan temsillerini analiz etmek; bu analizler aracılığıyla mekanın yokluğunun yarattığı etkiyi sorgulamaktır. Çalışma içinde, sanatçının eserlerine ait görsel ve yazınsal kaynaklara doküman inceleme yöntemiyle ulaşılmış; bulguların yorumlanmasında sanat ve mekan ile ilgili kuramsal yaklaşımlardan yararlanılmıştır.
