ANALYSIS OF THE TOURISM FLOWS FROM EUROPE TO TURKEY WITH PANEL GRAVITY MODEL

Abstract
The tourism sector, which is growing due to the intense touristic mobility from Europe to Turkey and the investments, provides a significant contribution to the economy. However, in recent years, due to internal and external factors, Turkish tourism has begun to experience serious problems. This study aimed to investigate the factors determining the tourism mobility from Europe to Turkey and to draw attention to the importance of the tourism sector in the economy. For this purpose, between 2000 and 2015, tourist trends from Europe to Turkey were analyzed using the panel data method using the gravity model. According to the results of the estimations, the per capita incomes and populations of eleven selected European countries have been found to influence the tourist flows towards Turkey according to the literature. On the other hand, touristic goods and services prices and transportation costs have affected the tourist flows negatively. Estimates of the dummy variable representing the exchange rate change and the 2008 global economic crisis were not statistically significant.
Özet
Avrupa’dan Türkiye’ye yönelik yoğun turist hareketliliğinin ve yatırımların etkisiyle büyüyen turizm sektörü, ekonomiye önemli katkı sağlamaktadır. Ancak son iki yıldır içsel ve dışsal faktörler nedeniyle Türk turizmi ciddi sıkıntılar yaşamaya başlamıştır. Bu çalışma, Avrupa’dan Türkiye’ye yönelik turizm hareketliliğini belirleyen faktörlerin araştırılmasını ve turizm sektörünün ekonomideki önemine dikkat çekmeyi hedeflemiştir. Bunun için 2000-2015 yılları arasında Avrupa’dan Türkiye’ye yönelik turist akımları, çekim modeli kullanılarak panel veri yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Tahmin sonuçlarına göre seçilmiş on bir Avrupa ülkesinin kişi başına düşen gelirleri ile nüfuslarının literatüre uygun olarak Türkiye’ye yönelik turist akımlarını olumlu etkilediği saptanmıştır. Buna karşın turistik mal ve hizmet fiyatları ile ulaşım maliyetlerinin turist akımlarını olumsuz etkilediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Döviz kuru değişkeni ve 2008 küresel ekonomik krizi temsil eden kukla değişkenin tahmini istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunamamıştır.
