Sexual Education and Abuse in Pre-School Period: An Examination of Children's Books

Abstract
Sexual education is an instruction that includes the delivery of information, attitude development, values, interpersonal communication and privacy issues. Sexual abuse is an illegal violation of social norms in which a child is forced into sexual activities that the child does not fully comprehend, is not ready for in developmental terms and does not have the capacity to approve. How the information about sexual education and protection from abuse should be presented to children has been a controversial topic from the past to the present. In the pre-school period the content of sexual education is classified as questions presented by children with a sexual content, learning about their bodies and protection from abuse. Sexual education should be supported by methods and visual materials appropriate to the level of perception of the child. One of these materials is illustrated children's books. Topics such as sexual education and abuse that are difficult for children to understand are presented in concrete form through children's books. From this aspect children's books are one of the most important aids for parents in delivering sexual education. Therefore, children's books need to have a correct content that is appropriate to their developmental characteristics so that they do not lead to wrong learning. With a view on this aspect, a descriptive model has been used as a qualitative research method to examine the appropriateness of the literature of children's books containing sexual education and abuse related to pre-school education. The study group of the study is comprised of 33 illustrated children’s books which have been determined with the criterion sampling from among purposeful sampling methods. The study attempted to cover the whole universe. A document review was carried out during the collection of the data. The obtained data were analyzed by descriptive analysis technique and content analysis technique. The study findings were expressed in terms of frequency and percentage and the appropriateness of the literature was determined. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the majority of the illustrated children's books covered in the study group were translations, and thus contained cultural differences. Furthermore, the fact that the translation of books regarding sexual education and protection from abuse started in 2008 and afterwards in Turkey suggests that the importance of the issue has been considered only lately. Despite the fact that the subject matter has been recognized, it has been concluded that the books examined are not sufficient to describe sexual education and abuse in a comprehensive and gradually. Illustrated children's books, including sexual education and abuse are considered to be inadequate both in terms of quality and quantity.

Cinsel eğitim, bilgi edinme, tutum geliştirme, değerler, kişiler arası iletişim ve mahremiyet konularını kapsayan bir eğitimdir. Cinsel istismar ise, çocuğun tam olarak anlayamadığı, gelişimsel yönden hazır olmadığı ve onaylama yetisinin olmadığı, toplumsal norm ve yasalara uygun olmayan cinsel aktivitelere zorlanmasıdır. Cinsel eğitim ve istismardan korunmaya yönelik bilgilerin çocuklara nasıl sunulması gerektiği geçmişten günümüze kadar tartışılan bir konu olmuştur. Okul öncesi dönemde cinsel eğitimin içeriği; çocukların cinsel içerikli soruları, bedenini tanıması ve istismara karşı korunması şeklinde gruplandırılmaktadır. Cinsel eğitim çocuğun algı düzeyine uygun yöntemler ve görsel materyaller ile desteklenmelidir. Bu materyallerden biri de resimli çocuk kitaplarıdır. Çocuklar için anlaşılması zor olan cinsel eğitim ve istismar gibi konular çocuk kitapları aracılığıyla somutlaştırılarak sunulmaktadır. Resimli çocuk kitapları bu yönüyle ailelerin cinsel eğitim vermesinde en önemli yardımcılardan biridir. Bu nedenle çocuk kitaplarının yanlış öğrenmelere neden olmaması için, doğru ve çocukların gelişim özelliklerine uygun içeriğe sahip olması gerekmektedir. Bu görüşler doğrultusunda okul öncesi döneme yönelik cinsel eğitim ve istismar içerikli resimli çocuk kitaplarının alanyazına uygunluğunu incelemek amacıyla nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden betimsel modele başvurulmuştur. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden ölçüt örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiş 33 resimli çocuk kitabı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada tüm evrene ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Resimli çocuk kitapları nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman inceleme yöntemi ile incelenmiştir. Betimsel analiz ve içerik analizi tekniği ile çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, frekans ve yüzde olarak ifade edilip alanyazına uygunluğu belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda, çalışma grubuna alınan resimli çocuk kitaplarının çoğunluğunun çeviri olduğu ve bu nedenle kültürel farklılıklar içerdiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bunlara ek olarak cinsel eğitim ve istismardan korunma içerikli kitapların Türkiye’de 2008 yılı ve sonrasında çevrilmeye başlanmış olması konunun öneminin geç fark edildiğini düşündürmektedir. Konunun önemi fark edilmiş olmasına rağmen incelenen kitapların cinsel eğitimi ve istismardan korunmayı kapsamlı ve aşamalı olarak anlatma yönünden yeterli olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Cinsel eğitimi ve istismarı kapsayan resimli çocuk kitaplarının hem nicelik hem de nitelik yönünden yetersiz olduğu düşünülmektedir.
