Abstract

Since the siege of Belgrade in 1521, the Crimean Tatars have been involved in all Hungarian campaigns of the Ottomans. The Kingdom of Hungary was divided into three regions after the Battle of Mohaç pitched battle. The northern and western regions were connected to the Habsburgs, the central parts to the Ottomans, and Eastern Hungary and Erdel were connected to the Ottoman State in vassal status. At first it was obliged to pay 10,000, then 15,000, and 40,000 gold from the mid-17th century. The Hungarian lands under Ottoman rule were declared friendly, and the cities in the hands of the Habsburgs were declared enemies. The Crimean Tatar documents given to the Hungarian cities were formed within the framework of these relations. While only one document appeared until the 16th century, these documents are increasing from the 17th century onwards. These documents are generally about that the Tatars do not persecute the people. For example, during the Ottoman-Austrian wars in 1658-1664 Varad castle in 1660 and Uyvar castle 3 years later was captured by the Ottomans. The Tatar army also participated in these campaigns. During this expedition, in a letter to the city of Cenceş, it was asked that no one the Tatar soldiers would hurt people of Cenceş because people of Cenceş was the reign of the Ottoman sultan. There are many more letters of protection like this. As can be seen from these examples, the Hungarian municipal and provincial archives contain documents containing important information regarding the history of the region.
