Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the hopelessness levels of 9th, 10th and 11th grade high school students in Cizre and their stress coping styles. A total of 305 students, 148 female and 157 male students, who were selected by rational sampling method among the students attending various high schools in Cizre participated in the study. Data is collected through Personal Knowledge Form, Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) adapted Seber (1991) and “Stress Coping Style Scale (SBÖ)” developed by Şahin & Durak (1995). The mean score of the students' scores on the Beck Hopelessness Scale (X ̅ = 5.26) show that the levels of hopelessness are not high. When the mean scores of Stress Coping Style Scale’s sub-dimensions were examined, it was determined that the sub-dimension with the highest mean score (X ̅ = 2.19) was the Self – Confident Approach. A negative moderate correlation between the Self-Confident Approach sub-dimension and the Beck Hopelessness Scale (r_s=-.36,p=.000) ,a negative low-significant relationship between the Optimistic Approach sub-dimension, (r_s=-.23,p=.001), a positive, low-significant relationship between the Desperate Approach sub-dimension (r_s=.22,p=.001), a positive, low-significant relationship between the Submissive Approach sub-dimension, (r_s=.23,p=.001), a negative, low-significant relationship between the Social Support Search Approach sub-dimension is determinated (r_s=-.21,p=.003). The mean scores obtained from the Self-Confident, Optimistic, and Social Support Search approaches from the sub dimensions of the Stress Coping Styles Scale are higher than other approaches, indicating that students are also effective in coping with stress.
