Abstract

Natural history museums are the hidden witnesses of nature which aims to introduce nature along with geological formations and living things. As such in other countries of the world, natural history museums had been established in the Ottoman Empire. One of them is the natural history museum, which was opened within the Merzifon Anatolian College. The curator of this museum, where important museum activities were carried out, was Ohannes Agop Manisacıyan (J. J. Manissadjian); By helping with important museums such as the British Museum as well as scientists who have come to the forefront with their studies in the international arena, he ensured that this museum was established and maintained for many years. This museum, which is visited by hundreds of people every day, has provided a local enlightenment in Anatolia and it has been ensured that science reaches the public with conferences held for the public in the museum building. When Merzifon Anatolian College was closed, the content of the museum, which was brought together with great effort, was distributed to different places in Anatolia. An important part of the collection was donated to the Tarsus American College. While the stuffed animals that were left in Merzifon could not reach the present day, a good part of the samples that were sent to Tarsus American College are still available. In this study, historical development of the museum was investigated; museum catalogue was translated into Turkish in order to reveal the natural artifacts that were obtained from Merzifon. It was revealed that until the museum closed, Merzifon was rich with birds and mammals; fossils from Cretaceous period were also found at Merzifon. Briefings about the museum were given with QR codes and presentations at Merzifon. It is expected that this study could pave the way for a natural history museum which could be established with similar objects once again.
