Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) has long been recognised as a major human pathogen responsib- le for a wide range of infections from mild skin infec- tions to wound infections and bacteremia. Although the introduction of antibiotics over the last 50 years has lowered the mortality rate from S. aureus infec- tions, the bacteria have developed resistance mec- hanisms to all antimicrobial agents. The prevalence of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in- fections have been increasing since the 1980s. These infections are difficult to control and they can cause a significant mortality and morbidity. Ensuring strict adherence to basic principles of infection cont- rol and educational programmes is necessary for increasing the awareness of and controlling S. aure- us infections especially in the intensive care units
