The opinions of university students on elder abuse

Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the opinions of university students on elder abuse. In this study, the questionnaire technic was used for data collection. The questionnaire included questions on the demographic information of the students (gender, age, etc.) as well as their opinions on elder abuse. Respondents (N= 317) selected by random sampling method among the studentsstudying at Kırıkkale University Faculty of Health Science, Child Development, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Health Management and Social Work Departments participated in the research. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18 for Windows program. In addition to descriptive statistics, the study employed parametric tests such as the t-test or the analysis of variance for the investigation ofthe relationships between variables. The study results revealed a low propensity for elder abuse in the university students. Furthermore, the female students and the students who had an elderly household member displayed a more positive attitude toward older adults
Özet
Bu araştırmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin yaşlı istismarına ilişkin düşüncelerini belirlemektir. Araştırmada verilerin toplanmasında anket tekniği kullanılmıştır. Ankette öğrencilerin kişisel bilgilerini belirlemeye yönelik sorular (cinsiyet, yaş vb) ile yaşlı istismarına yönelik düşüncelerini belirlemeye yönelik sorulara yer verilmiştir. Araştırmaya Kırıkkale Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi Çocuk Gelişimi, Fizyoterapi ve Rehabilitasyon, Sağlık Yönetimi ve Sosyal Hizmet Bölümlerinde öğrenim gören öğrenciler arasından rastgele örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilen ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 317 öğrenci katılmıştır. Araştırmada betimsel istatistiklerin yanı sıra değişkenler arası ilişkiler için t testi ve varyans analizi gibi parametrik testler kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, üniversite öğrencilerinin yaşlı istismar eğilimlerinin oldukça düşük olduğu gözlenmiştir. Diğer taraftan, kız öğrencilerin ve evinde bir yaşlı yaşayan öğrencilerin yaşlılara karşı daha olumlu yaklaşım içerisinde oldukları belirlenmiştir.
