Looking into the Korean War through a Documentary Film called “The Distinguished Army”

Abstract
Korean War has become a historical phenomenon with deep traces on the social life in Turkey. Although formal history writing in this country does not attribute much about this topic, oral narratives of veterans have had solid effects on the social memory. Yet there have been very few documentary films concerning this evidence. And most of these films were just prepared for anniversary purposes, bearing traditional documentary style interviews. There are almost no documentaries about Korean War with testimonies about the background of the battlefield. It is doubtless that documentaries prepared through oral history methods are very important and they contribute a lot to the writing of general history and thus history becomes a living object. “The Distinguished Army: The Last Witnesses of the Korean War” will be filling an important gap in this sense. Through various events and testimonials, this documentary will reveal hitherto unknown role of Turkish soldiers in the war and it also shed light on how public opinion of the Korean war was shaped then.
Özet
Kore Savaşı, Türkiye’nin sosyal hayatında derin izler bırakan bir olgudur. Genel tarih yazımında fazla yer verilmemesine karşın, savaşa katılanların sözlü anlatıları yoluyla toplumsal hafızada önemli bir yer edinmiştir. Konuyla ilgili yapılan belgesel çalışmalar sınırlı sayıdadır. Bu çalışmalar da genellikle savaşın yıldönümleri dolayısıyla ve geleneksel belgesel anlatım formatıyla hazırlanmışlardır. Tanıklıklar yoluyla savaşı ve cephe gerisini anlatan belgeseller ise yok denecek kadar azdır. Oysa sözlü tarih yöntemiyle hazırlanan belgeseller, genel tarih yazımına katkıda bulunma ve tarihi yaşayan bir nesne haline getirme niteliğine sahiptirler. “Mümtaz Birlik: Kore Savaşı’nın Son Tanıkları” belgeseli, bu anlamda önemli bir boşluğu doldurmaktadır. Bugüne kadar bilinmeyen çeşitli olayları tanıklıklar yoluyla ortaya çıkararak, Türk askerinin savaştaki rolüne ve Türkiye’de Kore kamuoyunun nasıl oluştuğuna ışık tutmaktadır.
