Energy Security Concept: A Discussion in light of 1973 Oil Crisis

Abstract
In this study, a discussion about the evolution of the concept of energy security is presented through the analysis of the case of 1973 oil crisis, the critical juncture led to a shift of modern understanding of energy security. This discussion, embracing the neorealist perspective and following the approach of source dependency, calls for a conceptual widening of energy security by including the economic dimension into the concept. This paper, along with this conceptual stretching, elucidates the impact of the1973 oil crisis onglobal economy as well with a specific focus on the strategies that were taken by Western countries so as to tackle with the crisis along with the precautions.
Özet
Bu çalışmada 1973 petrol krizinin enerji güvenliğine etkileri incelenmiştir. Enerji güvenliğinin kavramsal çerçevesi çizilmiş, neorealizm ve kaynak bağımlılığı yaklaşımı üzerinden kuramsal bir açıklamaya gidilmiştir. Krizin ortaya çıkmasına yol açan Arap-İsrail savaşlarına da kısaca değinilmiştir. Ayrıca krizin küresel ekonomiye etkileri üzerinde durulmuştur. Çalışmada, modern enerji güvenliğinin oluşmasında mezkûr krizin etkisi de vurgulanmıştır. Batılı devletlerin krizle başa çıkma adına uyguladıkları stratejiler ile aldıkları önlemler ve tüm bunların modern enerji güvenliğine etkileri tartışılmıştır.
