Abstract

Although the middle income trap is a concept that has started to be used in the economic literature since 2000s, it has become a popular subject that attracts a lot of attention with in this short period. The concept basically refers to the situation that countries, which switch from low income level to middle income level, remain at this income level for a long time and can not reach high income level. In this process, it is known that countries can not achieve a healthy structural transformation. In this study, convergence to some high-income countries‟ economic complexity levels for Turkey, Thailand and Malaysia which are determined to be middle-income trap countries in terms of some criteria has been examined. Economic complexity index is a new measure to represent structural transformation. As a result of the unit-root tests, it has been concluded that the economic complexity indices of Turkey and Thailand have not converged to the high-income countries‟ index values while Malaysia‟s economic complexity index has converged. These results can be interpreted such that Malaysia is more probable to overcome the middle income trap than Turkey and Thailand.
