Importance of Personality Towards Accounting Profession: An Application in Vocational School Students

Muhasebe Mesleğine Yönelimde Kişiliğin Önemi: Meslek Yüksek Okulu Öğrencileri Üzerinde Bir Uygulama

Abstract

In this study, the relationship between the personality traits and the accounting profession tendencies of the students studying at the Bartın University Vocational School, Business Management and Accounting programs was examined. For this purpose, the survey was implemented to 139 students who study at these programs. Five Factor Personality Scale was used in order to determine personal features and personality dimensions of the students. As a result of the survey, individual points were found for each student according to 5 factors, and each student’s dominant personality was identified. To determine whether there was a meaningful relationship between the personality traits of the students and the accounting profession orientations, Chi Square Test and T Test were conducted. Analysis have revealed that the gender, the level of success and the level of interest in accounting courses are significant factors at orientation to the accounting profession. Students' program, general grade averages and their horoscope have no significant effect on the orientation of the accounting profession. Moreover, that was determined Conscientiousness personality dimension and Emotional Stability personality dimension were significantly effective on orientation to accounting profession.

Özet

Bu çalışma ile Bartın Üniversitesi Meslek Yüksek Okulu, İşletme Yönetimi ve Muhasebe programlarında okuyan öğrencilerin kişilik özellikleri ile muhasebe mesleğine yönelimleri arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla ilgili bölümlerde okuyan 139 öğrenciye anket uygulanmıştır. Öğrencilerin kişilik özelliklerini ve kişilik boyutlarını tespit edebilmek amacıyla Beş Faktör Kişilik Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Bu test sonucunda her öğrenci için 5 faktöre göre ayrı ayrı kişilik puanları bulunmuş ve her öğrencide baskın olan kişiliğin hangisi olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin kişilik özellikleri ile muhasebe mesleğine yönelimleri arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunup bulunmadığını ölçmek için Ki Kare Testi ve T Testi yapılmıştır. Analizler sonucunda cinsiyete göre, muhasebe derslerindeki başarı düzeyine göre, muhasebe derslerindeki ilgi düzeyine göre muhasebe mesleğine yönelim anlamlı bir şekilde değişmektedir. Öğrencilerin eğitim gördüğü bölüm, genel not ortalamaları ve burçlarının muhasebe mesleğine yönelimlerinde anlamlı bir etkisi bulunamamıştır. Ayrıca kişilik boyutlarından Sorumluluk kişilik boyutu ve Duygusal Denge kişilik boyutları ile mesleğe yönelim arasında anlamlı ilişkiler bulunmuştur.
