Life style of a grand vizier in the beginning of 18th century based on the estate records: Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha

Abstract

The meaning of the word “estate” is, all the property an individual leaves after his or her death. Estate records -also known as inheritance records- were highly important sources in Ottoman History for the people who studied on economic and social history. Because, with the help of estate written on the records; we can get information about that person’s social life, life standard, purchase power, social relations and even his or her world-view. The record which we examined belongs to Edirne and it is located in National Library with number 89. In the record there are some estate entries and the estate of Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha –the subject that we examined- is one of these entries. Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha was a statesman who was assigned to several positions and finally became grand vizier and died in 1702. According to the entries written on the record, his estates have enough quality to give us some clues about the life styles of Ottoman statesmen in the beginning of 18th century. But in this study, we want to expand the subject by examining the estate records of middle class people and also focus on the differences or components of life styles of dominators and dominated people in Ottoman society.

Özet

Tereke sözcük anlamı olarak ölen bir kişinin bıraktığı şeyler demektir. Tereke defterleri diğer adıyla muhallefât defterleri Osmanlı Tarihi’nde ekonomik ve sosyal tarih çalışmaları yapanlar açısından son derece önemli kaynaklardır. Çünkü bu defterlerde ölen kişinin bıraktığı eşyalardan hareketle kişinin sosyal hayatı, yaşam standardı, alım gücü, toplumsal ilişkileri hatta dünya görüşü hakkında fikir sahibi olmamız mümkün olabilmektedir. İncelediğimiz defter, Edirne tereke defteridir. Defterin genelinde tereke kayıtları mevcuttur ve konumuz olan Amcazâde Hüseyin Paşa’nın terekesi de bu kayıtlardan birisidir. Amcazâde Hüseyin Paşa, Osmanlı Devleti’nde çeşitli görevlerde bulunduktan sonra vezir-i azamlığa kadar çıkmış bir devlet adamıdır. Onun bahsi geçen defterde yer aldığı kadarıyla bıraktığı eşyaları ise 18. yüzyılın başlarında Osmanlı devlet adamlarının yaşam tarzı hakkında ipuçları verecek nitelikte görülmektedir.
