THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN AYYUBIS AND ALMOHADS IN THE LATE 12TH CENTURY

Abstract

With his triumph in the Battle of Hattin in 1187, Selâhaddin Ayyubî abolished the Kingdom of Jerusalem and took back Jerusalem, which had been ruled by the Christians for 88 years. Following this triumph, he caused the Christian world, led by the Pope, to launch the third Crusade. Selâhaddin Ayyubî sought remedies to cope with the Crusaders during this period when he was being overwhelmed by the new Crusade. In this sense, he sent letters to the surrounding Muslim rulers, especially to Baghdad, where the Abbasid caliphate resided and asked for assistance. When these demands for help were not met, he sent delegations to the western neighbor Almohads to demand naval support. Although the Almohad caliphate received the delegates very well, he failed to provide the support demanded by Saladin Ayyubi. In the present study we discuss his request of support from the Almohads and the reasons why the requests were turned down.

Özet

Selahaddin Eyyubi, 1187’de Hıttîn Savaşı’nda elde ettiği zafer sonrasında Kudüs Krallığı’nı ortadan kaldırarak 88 yıl boyunca Hıristiyanların elinde bulunan Kudüs’ü geri almıştır. Bu durum karşısında Papa’nın başını çektiği Hıristiyan dünyasının III. Haçlı Seferini başlatmasına sebep olmuştur. Selahaddin Eyyubî, yeni Haçlı Seferiyle son derece sıkıştırıldığı bu dönemde, Haçlılarla baş edebilmek için çareler aramıştır. Bu anlamda başta Abbasî hilafet merkezi Bağdat olmak üzere çevredeki Müslüman hükümdarlara mektuplar göndererek yardım talebinde bulunmuştur. Bu yardım taleplerine karşılık bulamayınca batı komşusu Muvahhidlere de donanma desteği talebini ilettiği heyetler göndermiştir. Muvahhidler halifesi Yakup Mansur, bu heyetleri çok iyi karşılamış olmakla birlikte Selahaddin Eyyubi tarafından istenilen desteği vermemiştir. Bu tebliğde onun Muvahhidlerden yardım talebiyle, bu yardım isteğinin yerine getirilmeme sebepleri anlatılacaktır.
