Abstract

In this study, it was investigated whether the perceived social support and family functionality of mothers and fathers with children with autism or down syndrome have a significant effect on their psychological well-being. In the study, families with children with autism and down syndrome living in Turkey were reached. Due to the pandemic conditions, 152 of the questionnaires were filled online with the voluntary participation of parents. 14 of which were given forms to the parents of the child diagnosed with autism and down syndrome, who were educated in a special education center operating in Istanbul, a total of 166 parents were reached. While collecting the data, the condition of having parents living in the same family was not sought. Personal Information Form, Psychological Well-Being Scale for Married Women and Men, Revised-Parental Social Support Scale and Family Assessment Scale were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using Independent Sample t-Test, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Regression Analysis. It has been shown that the level of psychological well-being increases as the perceived social support level and family functionality of the families of children with autism and Down syndrome increase. In addition, it is found out that mothers tend to have lower level of psychological well-being than fathers; It was determined that the perceived social support level of the parents whose child was diagnosed with Down syndrome was higher than that of the parents whose child was diagnosed with autism.
