Abstract
Ghazali was a philosopher who left his mark on the Islam world just as Augustine, a philosopher, had a a great impact on the Christian world. Both of them were in an attempt to find out their selves by going through various stages in mental and spiritual matters throughout their lives. The social and political turmoil which took place in the communities they lived in, and the dilemmas that occurred in their inner worlds led them to think about their inner journeys. According to Augustine, the methods of spiritual maturation are asceticism, repentance, knowledge, love and gratitude. As to Ghazali, the methods of spiritual maturation are repentance, will, asceticism, love, gratitude and asceticism. The purpose of these methods is purification of the soul, purification of the heart and spiritual development. Especially during the seclusion periods, the works of Augustine's "Confessiones" and Ghazali's "İhyâu Ulumid'din" are the summary of their intellectual life and the project of the purification they wanted to realize. In order that one can realize oneself and establish benign manners in one's heart, one needs to be purified. Authors also explained the maturation methods in connection with the teachings of their own religions. The article aims to mention how Ghazali and Augustin, both of whom have different beliefs but the same purpose, reflect their notions on the issue.
