Knowledge and awareness of medical laboratory students about chemical materials

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to raise awareness and to increase the level of knowledge of Medical Laboratory students about the chemical substances used by the Medical Laboratory. Materials and Methods: A survey study with cross-sectional research design was conducted as questionnaire study. Legal permission was obtained for the study and Medical Laboratory students of a public university were included in the research. Each student was informed about the purpose of the research and the questionnaire form, and giving verbal consents were included in the study. Data gathering in the survey was carried out questionnaire under the observation that consist of 42 questions and 3 sections. SPSS for Windows 22.0” package program was used in the evaluation of the data. Results: A total of 175 students participated in the survey. 78% of the participants were female. The average age of the participants was 19,42 ± 1,84. 30% of the participants graduated from the health profession. 73% of the participants had taken “Chemistry and Chemistry Application” course during high school education. 73% of students correctly were identified all of the laboratory safety related pictograms. 63% of the participants were thought of medical laboratories as risky work areas in terms of occupational health and safety. 51% were known that chemistry with volatile properties should be stored at + 4 oC. 72% of students were conscious of that chemical wastes should not be poured into sinks or open areas. 100% of theirs were known that they should use a gloves, 92% were needed to wear safety goggles and 60% were used a stove when working with corrosive chemicals. Conclusion: The data obtained show that the level of knowledge about the occupational risks of the students should be increased. Within this scope, it is recommended to inform the students regularly and organize training programs.

Amaç: Tıbbi Laboratuvar öğrencilerinin laboratuvar uygulamalarında kullandıkları kimyasal maddeler ile ilgili bilgi ve farkındalıklarının belirlenmesi amaçlandı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel araştırma tasarımına sahip çalışmamız, anket çalışması olarak planlandı. Çalışma için gerekli yasal izin alınmış olup, araştırmaya bir devlet üniversitesinin Tıbbi Laboratuvar öğrencileri dahil edildi. Her öğrenciye araştırmanın amacı ve anket formu hakkında bilgi verilerek, sözlü onam verenler çalışmaya dahil edildi. Araştırmada veri toplama gereci olarak, 3 bölümden oluşan toplam 42 soruluk anket gözlem altında uygulandı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesi aşamasında SPSS for Windows 22.0 paket programı kullanıldı. Bulgular: Anket çalışmamıza toplam 175 ön lisans öğrencisi katıldı. Katılımcıların %78’i kadındı. Katılımcı öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 19,42 ± 1,84 bulundu. Katılımcıların %30’unun sağlık meslek lisesinden mezun olduğu tespit edildi. Katılımcıların %73’nün lise eğitimi sırasında “Kimya ve Kimya Uygulama” dersi almış oldukları belirlendi. Öğrencilerin %73’nün laboratuvar güvenliği ile ilgili piktogramların hepsini doğru tanımladığı tespit edildi. Öğrencilerin %63’ü tıbbi laboratuvarları iş sağlığı ve güvenliği açısından riskli çalışma alanları olarak değerlendiği görüldü. %51’nin uçucu özelliğe sahip kimyasalların +4 oC de saklanması gerektiğini bildiği belirlendi. %72 öğrencisi ise; kimyasal madde atıklarının lavabo veya açık alanlara dökülmemesi gerektiğini belirtti. Korozif kimyasallar (asitler, bazlar) ile güvenli çalışma ile ilgili öğrencilerimizin %100’ü eldiven kullanımı, %92’si koruyucu gözlük kullanılması gerektiğini
