The survey was completedface-to-face with the participants between January 1, 2010 and March 31, 2010 at Erciyes University Newborn and socialpediatricclinics. Percentage, mean and standarddeviation were calculated in the statisticalanalysis of the data, and chi-square was used in comparing the groups. At the end of the study, it was found that the participantmothers’ average age was 28.2±5.2 (min:17 max:59) year and 96.1% was stillbreastfeeding during the study. Also, according to the results, 81.4% breastfed their babiesafter the delivery, 68.7% breastfed in the firsthalfhourafter the delivery, 59.3% breastfedwhenever their babiescried, and 39.7% stated that theywanted to breastfeed their babiesuntilthey were two years old. 99.2% of the mothersindicated that they had been working on increasing the amount of milkthey had. The participantmothersbelieve that eatingsoup (98.5%), fruit&vegetables (97.9%), bulghur (96.7%), and drinkingwater (99.3%) help to increase the amount of milktheyhave. The relationship between the genders of babies and wheretheylive, and the traditionalpractices to increase the amount of mother’smilk was found significant (p<0,05).The participantmothersbelieve that traditionalpracticeshelp the increase of the amount of mother’smilk. Most oftenpractices are related to eatinghabits and the consumption of liquid. To have an effective and long-termbreastfeeding period, mothers should be educated during their pregnancies with the consideration of their traditionalbelief system. In their training, traditionalpractices should be takenintoconsideration.
