Care burden in cancer patients and its effect on caregivers

Abstract

Introduction and purpose: It has been stated that caregivers of cancer patients experience physiological and psychological problems due to unwanted physical and emotional symptoms resulting from the disease process and treatments. The purpose of this study is to discuss the care burden in cancer patients and their effects on caregivers in postgraduate nursing theses conducted in our country. Materials and Methods: In the study, 83 postgraduate thesis studies in the field of nursing were reached by scanning with the keyword “care burden” on the official website of the Higher Education Council National Thesis Center. Of these, filtering with the words “cancer”, “oncology” and “leukemia” reached a total of 19 theses. Results: It was found that17 of the theses are master’s and 2 of them are doctorate and most of them (13) were made in the last five years. n the studies it was determined that caregivers of cancer patients perceive care as a moderate burden and their social support is high; as the social support they perceive from the family increases, the burden of care decreases; as the burden of care increased, their satisfaction with life decreased. In the studies examined, it was concluded that the burden of care negatively affects the quality of life, psychological health, economy, physical and social status of the family members who provide care. Conclusion: Postgraduate nursing thesis studies show that family members who give primary care to cancer patients experience stress while performing their supportive roles for their patients, physical, psychological, social health conditions and quality of life are negatively affected, and negative emotional states such as anxiety, anger and depression occur. It is thought that increasing the quality studies including nursing care practices for care burden will contribute to the development of evidence-based practices in this field.

Giriş ve Amaç: Hastalık süreci ve uygulanan tedavilerden kaynaklanan istenmeyen fiziksel ve emosyonel semptomlar nedeniyle kanser hastalarına bakım verenlerin, fizyolojik ve psikoljik sorunlar yaşadıkları belirtilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ülkemizde yürütülen lisansüstü hemşirelik tezlerinde kanserli hastalarda bakım yükü ve bakım verenlerde etkilerini tartışmaktır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmada, Yükseköğretim Kurulu Ulusal Tez Merkezi resmi web sayfasında “bakım yükü” anahtar kelimesi ile yapılan taramada hemşirelik alanında yapılmış 83 lisansüstü tez çalışmasına ulaşılmıştır. Bunlardan “kanser” “onkoloji” ve “lösemi” kelimeleri ile yapılan filtrelemede ise toplam 19 teze ulaşılmıştır. Bulgular: İncelenen tezlerden 17’si yüksek lisans ve 2’si doktora düzeyinde olup, büyük çoğunluğunun (13) son beş yılda yapılmış olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmalarda, kanserli hastalara bakım verenlerin bakım vermeyi orta derecede yük olarak algıladığı, algıladıkları sosyal desteğin yüksek olduğu, aileden algıladıkları sosyal destek arttıkça bakım yüklerinin azaldığı, bakım yükleri arttıkça yaşamdan aldıkları doyumlarının azaldığı belirlenmiştir. İncelenen çalışmalarda bakım yükünün; bakım veren aile bireylerinin yaşam kalitesi, psikolojik sağlığı, ekonomisi, fiziksel ve sosyal durumunu olumsuz yönde etkilediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Sonuç: Lisansüstü hemşirelik tez çalışmaları, kanserli hastalara primer bakım veren aile üyelerinin hastaları için destekleyici rollerini yerine getirirken stres yaşadığını, fiziksel, psikolojik, sosyal sağlık durumları ve yaşam kalitelerinin olumsuz etkilendiğini, anksiyete, öfke ve depresyon gibi olumsuz duygu durumlarının ortaya çıktığını göstermektedir.
