Abstract
Gender inequality, which is one of the important agenda topics at both national and international scale, is a common phenomenon that is associated with many fields such as human rights, law, psychology, sociology, economy. For this reason, it is an important issue about which countries and related institutions try to raise awareness. Although there are many scientific publications covering the gender inequality in terms of freedom of expression, healthcare rights, opportunities for education, employment opportunities, it has been found that there is a limited number of studies conducted in this field in Turkey. In this study, based on the international reports and the gender statistics published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), it is aimed to measure the level of public awareness of gender inequality in Turkey. In line with this aim, Marmara University academic staff were determined as the target group and a questionnaire on gender inequality in Turkey was given. By means of statistical analyses, the rate of the awareness of gender realities as it pertains to the awareness of gender inequality on the part of the academic staff was measured. In general, it has been found out that the rate of awareness on the part of the academic staff involved in the research is low. From this finding, it can be predicted that the awareness of the less educated part of the society is even lower. As a result of the statistical tests, a statistically significant difference was found in terms of sex, between the mean number of correct answers given to the questions, and it was concluded that the number of average correct answers given to the questions by women was more than those by men.
Özet
Hem ulusal hem de uluslararası ölçekte önemli gündem konularından biri olan toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliği; insan hakları, hukuk, psikoloji, sosyoloji, ekonomi gibi pek çok alanı ilgilendiren ortak bir sorundur. Bu sebeple, ülkeler ve ilgili kurumlarca kamuoyunda farkındalık ve bilinç oluşturulmaya çalışılan güncel bir konudur. Toplumsal cinsiyet olgusunu; fikir özgürlüğü, sağlık hakları, eğitim fırsatı, istihdam olanakları vb. bağlamda ele alan çok sayıda bilimsel yayın mevcut olmakla birlikte, Türkiye’de bu alanda yapılan çalışmaların sınırlı sayıda olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, uluslararası raporlar ve Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) tarafından yayınlanan istatistikler temel alınarak, Türkiye’de toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliği hakkında kamuoyunun farkındalığı ölçülmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, Marmara Üniversitesi öğretim elemanları hedef kitle olarak belirlenmiş ve toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliği ile ilgili bir anket uygulaması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan istatistiksel analizlerle, toplumsal cinsiyet realitesi ile öğretim elemanlarının konuya ilişkin farkındalığının ne ölçüde örtüştüğü incelenmiştir. Genel olarak, araştırmaya katılan öğretim elemanlarında farkındalığın düşük olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Bu bulgudan hareketle, toplumun daha az eğitimli kesiminde farkındalığın daha da düşük olduğu öngörülebilir. Yapılan testler sonucunda, sorulara verilen ortalama doğru cevap sayısı yönünden cinsiyete göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmuş; kadınların farkındalığının erkeklerden yüksek olduğu kanaatine varılmıştır.
