Abstract
In the 19th century historical circumstances experienced various ways of modernization in Turkey and the Turkic World. The opening of modern schools, establishing the public school system, as more people became literate, the development of printing press, the growth of cultural publications and the arrival of novels and theatre plays from Europe brought novelty to the society and created a new language. According to the general linguistics data it is well known that the meaning structure of a language is directly related to the life of the society and the changes in life are directly reflected in the semantics of the language. Being associated with the title it is necessary to emphasise the connection between society and language from the polysemy point of view. The Turkish word for organization, ocak, as used in the military terminology Acemi ocağı, Yeniçeri ocağı, Cebeci ocağı, Topcu ocağı can be accepted as examples of polysemy. As another example, the Turkish word sancak had the meaning "flag" during the Ottoman Empire, but “administration” and “command” during the XV century as well as "administrative region". However, the word oda, which has also got a modern meaning “an official association for business owners”, in the connection with sanayi odası, ticaret odası, got this meaning obviously in the translation (calque) of the French word chamber (calque) after the Tanzimat in the XIX century. A lot of words started to derive from French language into Turkish during the XIX century and still a precious number of borrowed words exist almost unchanged. In addition to these, like the copied meaning (calque) examples as ticaret odası, sanayi odası, polysemy needs to be examined more detailed. This article examines the polysemy of the words oda “chamber”, daire “office” etc.
