Family in the Ottoman Society: The Sample of Rodoscuk (1785-1810)

Abstract

The concept of family, which is the smallest structure of society, is one of the leading institutions in which the effects and results of material and spiritual changes and transformations in societies can be clearly observed. Starting from this context, this study, which examines the family institution in the Ottoman society through the example of Rodoscuk, emphasizes the family life in Rodoscuk in the last quarter of the eighteenth century and the first quarter of the nineteenth century. In this study six records of Rhodoscuk sharia registers belonging to the years "1785-1810" are used as the main source; first of all, family structure in Rodoscuk; family types, sovereignty principle, number of spouses were examined separately and then the basic dynamics of the family institution such as marriage, divorce, alimony, inheritance and testament are touched. In the study; it has been determined that there are many similarities in family life of Muslim and non-Muslim subjects in the current settlement.

Özet

Toplumun en küçük yapı taşını oluşturan “aile”, toplumlarda meydana gelen maddi ve manevi değişim ve dönüşümlerin etki ve sonuçlarının net olarak gözlenebildiği kurumların başında gelmektedir. Bu bağlamdan yola çıkarak Rodoscuk örneği üzerinden Osmanlı toplumunda aile kurumunun incelendiği bu çalışmada; on sekizinci yüzyılın son çeyreği ve on dokuzuncu yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde Rodoscuk’taki aile hayatı üzerinde durulmuştur. “1785-1810” yıllarına ait altı adet Rodoscuk Şer’iye Sicilinin ana kaynak olarak kullanıldığı bu çalışmada; ilk olarak Rodoscuk’taki aile yapısı; aile tipleri, hâkimiyet esası, eş sayıları bakımından ayrı ayrı incelenmiş ardından aile kurumunun temel dinamikleri olan evlilik, boşanma, nafaka, miras ve vesâyet gibi konulara değinilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmada; mevcut yerleşim yerinde bulunan Müslim ve Gayrimüslim tebaanın aile yaşantılarında pek çok yönden benzerlik olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
