STEM FROM GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS, TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND PARENTS’ PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the perspectives of gifted and talented students in Science and Art Center (BİLSEM), their parents, teachers and administrators about STEM approach. The research is mixed method research and carried out by applying the convergent parallel design. The study group consisted of 283 people consisting of 184 students, 79 parents, 26 teachers and administrators of a BİLSEM in a provincial center. As for the measuremet tools; STEM Attitude Scale adapted to Turkish by Yıldırım and Selvi (2015) was used to determine the attitudes of students in BİLSEM. And the questionnaire developed by the researchers was used to get the opinions of teachers-administrators and parents. In the analysis of quantitative data, Mann Whitney-U Test and Kruskal Wallis-H Test were performed using SPSS-22 package program. The open-ended questions in the questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive analysis. It was found that there were statistically significant differences among students in BİLSEM according to the gender, grade level and the program in which BILSEM continued. Although a significant number of teachers in BİLSEM were aware of STEM education, they did not receive any training on this subject. However, educators and parents expressed positive opinions about the importance of STEM education. It can be ensured that the goals related to the fields of STEM are included in the curriculum developed for BİLSEMs.

Özet

Çalışmanın amacı, FeTeMM yaklaşımının, BİLSEM'lerdeki özel yetenekli öğrenci, öğretmen, idareci ve veli bakış açısıyla ortaya konmasıdır. Araştırmada, karma-yöntem araştırma desenlerinden yakınsayan paralel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu, bir il merkezindeki BİLSEM’in 184 öğrencisi, 79 velisi, 26 öğretmeni ve idarecisinden oluşan 283 kişilik gruptur. Ölçme aracı olarak BİLSEM öğrencilerinin tutumlarını belirlerken Yıldırım ve Selvi(2015) tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanan FeTeMM Tutum Ölçeği, öğretmen-idareci ve velilerin görüşlerini almak için araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen anket kullanılmıştır. Nicel verilerin analizinde SPSS-22 paket programı kullanılarak, Mann Whitney-U Testi ve Kruskal Wallis-H Testi yapılmıştır. Anketlerdeki açık uçlu sorular, betimsel analiz yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. BİLSEM öğrencilerinin FeTeMM alanlarında cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi ve BİLSEM'de devam ettikleri programa göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farkların olduğu belirlenmiştir. BİLSEM eğitimcilerinin önemli bir kısmı FeTeMM eğitiminden haberdar olmalarına karşın, bu konuda bir eğitim almamışlardır. Ancak FeTeMM eğitimin önemine ilişkin olarak eğitimciler ve veliler olumlu yönde fikir belirtmişlerdir. BİLSEM’ler için geliştirilen öğretim programlarına, FeTeMM alanlarına ilişkin kazanımların yerleştirilmesi sağlanabilir.
