Errors and deficiencies are seen in the etymological dictionaries of the Turkish published until today. These are mentioned in various works. An independent analysis on Old Turkic dictionaries in the light of the knowledge and principles of modern etymology has not been done unfortunately. Sir Gerard CLAUSON’s dictionary titled “An Etymological Dictionary of Pre-Thirteenth Century Turkish” (1972) is a remarkable work. CLAUSON offers us a ‘probable etymology’. In the article, the 128 entries of ‘probable etymology’ proposed by him has been identified.
