Social Studies Teachers Examination of Sensitivity to Cultural Values

Abstract
Social studies course includes many cultures and some cultural values belonging to these cultures. In this context, due to the nature of the course, it is important for social studies teachers to be sensitive to the different cultural values that their students carry. Therefore, this research is a quantitative study conducted in the descriptive survey model in order to determine the sensitivity levels of social studies teachers towards cultural values and to compare them in terms of different variables. The study group consists of a total of 213 social studies teachers, 98 males and 115 females, working in private or public schools in different settlements in Turkey in the 2020-2021 academic year. “Cultural Sensitive Teacher Scale” was used as a data collection tool in the research. The data obtained from the scale were used in the context of the purpose and questions of the research, arithmetic mean, t-test for independent groups, Mann Whitney U test and one-way Anova tests. As a result of the research, it was seen that social studies teachers had a high level of sensitivity to cultural values, and there was no significant difference according to variables such as gender, institution, educational status and age.
Özet
Sosyal bilgiler dersi, birçok kültürü ve bu kültürlere ait bazı kültürel değerleri içeriğinde barındırmaktadır. Bu bağlamda dersin doğasının gereği olarak sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin öğrencilerinin taşıdığı farklı kültürel değerlere karşı duyarlı olmaları önemlidir. Bu yüzden bu araştırma sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin kültürel değerlere yönelik duyarlılık düzeylerini belirlemek ve farklı değişkenler açısından karşılaştırmak amacıyla gerçekleştirilen betimsel tarama modelinde nicel bir araştırmadır. Araştırma grubunu, 2020-2021 eğitim-öğretim yılında, Türkiye’nin farklı yerleşim birimlerindeki özel ve devlet okullarında görev yapmakta olan 98 erkek, 115 kadın olmak üzere toplam 213 sosyal bilgiler öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak “Kültürel Değerlere Duyarlı Öğretmen Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Ölçekten elde edilen verilerin analizinde araştırmanın amacı ve soruları bağlamında aritmetik ortalama, bağımsız gruplar için t-testi, Mann Whitney U testi ve one-way Anova testlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin kültürel değerlere duyarlılık düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu, cinsiyet, kurum, eğitim durumu ve yaş gibi değişkenlere göre de anlamlı bir farklılıklar göstermediği tespit edilmiştir.
