Supporting the Sultan’s Judgement with Hadiths: The Tratise Titled Khulâsatu’l-Burhan fî Itaati’s-Sultan by Shaykhulislam Yasincizade Abdulwahhab Efendi from the Period of Mahmud II

Abstract

Yasincizade Abdulwahhab Efendi served five years as ashaykhulislam during t he r eign o f M ahmud I I, w ho w as one of t he mosteffective sultans of Ottoman modernization. And Yasincizade AbdulwahhabEfendi’s treatise titled KHulâsatu’l-Burhan fî İtaati’s-Sultan was one of the mostimportant works of that period. For, the reforms of Mahmud II were supportedby the religious proofs in this treatise. Thus, twenty-five hadiths of the Prophet(p.b.u.h.) were presented within the tradition of writing forty-hadith so as toestablish an integrity around the perspective of obeying the sultan. In thisarticle, we aimed to contribute the studies on the history of Ottomanmodernization by transcribing the Khulâsa. The hadiths recorded in the treatiseare extracted and authenticated (takhrij). In order to determine the style thatYasincizade used in hadith translations, the hadith texts are matched with thetranslated ones. In addition, we stated the sources of the treatise andsummarized the contents of hadiths. Then we wrote a short conclusion.
