The Rising Voice from the lodge of Progress and the Idea of Evolution: How Does a Sheikh Refute the Theory of Darwin?

Abstract
In this article, the transcription of a manuscript on the main issues of Ottoman modernization, the idea of evolution and evolution, its connection with the Darwinian Theory and finally the criticism of Darwinian philosophy will be given; the content of the manuscript will be evaluated. The author of this manuscript named Darvin’e Cevab İrşadu’l-Ğâvîn Bi-Reddi Nazariyeti Feylesof Darvin is Mehmed Elif Efendi, who was a sheikh from 1980 until the year of 1926, when the lodges were closed in the Eyüp Hasîrîzâde Dergâhı, one of the most important lodges of Ottoman Istanbul. This manuscript, probably written in the early years of the Republic, was only the name of this manuscript known until 2016. On the occasion of this manuscript, it will be examined how the concept of evolution and evolution discussed in different circles in the last period of the Ottoman Empire was understood and analyzed by a sufi.

Bu makalede, Osmanlı modernleşmesinin temel meselelerinden terakki ve tekâmül fikrini, bunun Darwin Nazariyesi ile irtibatını, nihayet Darwinci felsefenin tenkidini muhtevi bir yazmanın çevrimyazısı verilecek, yazmanın muhtevası tahlil edilecektir. Darvin’e Cevab İrşadu’l-Ğâvîn Bi-Reddi Nazariyeti Feylesof Darvin isimli bu yazmanın müellifi, Osmanlı İstanbulu’nun en mühim tekkelerinden Eyüp Hasîrîzâde Dergâhı’nda 1880’den tekkelerin sırlandığı 1926’ya kadar postnişin olan Mehmed Elif Efendi’dir. Muhtemelen Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarında yazılan bu yazmanın, 2016’ya kadar literatürde sadece ismi bilinmekteydi. Bu yazma vesilesiyle, Osmanlı’nın son döneminde farklı mahfillerde tartışılan terakki ve tekâmül fikrinin bir tekke müntesibi tarafından nasıl anlaşılıp tahlil edildiği ortaya konulacaktır.
