Identification and Comparison of Epistemological Belief Profiles of Gifted Students and Their Parents

Üstün Yetenekli Öğrenciler ile Velilerinin Epistemolojik İnanç Profillerinin Belirlenmesi ve Karşılaştırılması

Abstract

The purpose of this study; to reveal and compare epistemological belief profiles of gifted students and their parents. For this purpose, a comparative research design, which is one of the non-experimental quantitative research methods, was adopted in the study. In the study, gifted students (n = 25), who studies at a BİLSEM located within the boundaries of Bursa province and parents of these students (n = 25) participated. In the study, the epistemological beliefs of the participants were tried to be measured with a field-independent scenario (vignette) and the participants were confirmed for the data obtained through semi-structured interviews. The data obtained in the study were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The reliability value for the inter-rater agreement was determined as 96%. As a result of the study, it was seen that the absolutist epistemological belief profile was dominant throughout the sample for both gifted students and their parents and it has been determined that the epistemological belief profiles of gifted students are similar to the epistemological belief profiles of their parents in this context, it is recommended to increase the number of studies focusing on the epistemological beliefs of students and parents in the gifted science education literature.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı; üstün yetenekli öğrenciler ile velilerinin epistemolojik inanç profillerinin belirlenmesi ve karşılaştırılmasıdır. Bu amaçla çalışmada deneysel olmayan nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden karşılaştırmalı araştırma deseni benimsenmiştir. Çalışmaya Bursa ili sınırları içerisinde yer alan bir Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi’nde (BİLSEM) öğrenim gören üstün yetenekli öğrenciler (n = 25) ve bu öğrencilerin velileri (n = 25) katılım sağlamaktadır. Çalışmada katılımcıların epistemolojik inançları alan-bağımsız bir senaryo (vignette) ile ölçülmeye çalışılmış ve gerçekleştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış mülakatlar yoluyla elde edilen verilere yönelik katılımcıların teyidi sağlanmıştır. Çalışmada elde edilen veriler betimsel analiz yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Değerlendirmeciler arası uyuma ilişkin güvenirlik değeri %96 olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda, hem üstün yetenekli öğrenciler hem de velileri için örneklemin genelinde kesinlikçi (absolutist) epistemolojik inanç profilinin hâkim olduğu ve üstün yetenekli öğrencilerin epistemolojik inanç profillerinin velilerinin epistemolojik inanç profilleriyle benzerlik gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir. Bu bağlamda, üstün yetenekli fen eğitimi literatüründe öğrenci ve velilerin epistemolojik inançlarını odağa alan çalışmaların artırılması önerilmektedir.
