THE MUQATTA‘AT LETTERS I

Abstract

Muslim scholars made various comments about the muqatta‛at letters which are at the beginning of some chapters of the Quran and they came up with a great deal of ideas regarding the meanings and implications of muqatta‛at letters. Furthermore, there were debates about whether muqatta‛at letters are muhkam or mutashabih. While some scholars accepted them as mutashabih and consequently abstained from coming up with any interpretations about them, the others tried to interpret them and as a result they made many claims on the subject matter. In this study, examining various sources, we came up with explanations of the conceptual meaning of hurûf al-muqaṭṭa„a, and pointed out their places in the Quran. Furthermore we touched on their relationship with the terms muhkam and mutashabih and as a result we dealt with the issue whether it is possible to interpret them or not and we pointed out the evidences of those who prefer to interpret these letters and to the proofs of those who refrain from interpreting them.

Özet

İslam âlimleri, Kur'an'ın bazı surelerinin başında bulunan mukatta'a harflerinin ne anlama geldiği ve neye delalet ettiğiyle ilgili çeşitli teviller yapmışlardır. Bu teviller neticesinde söz konusu harflerle ilgili birçok farklı görüş ve düşünce ortaya çıkmıştır. Öte yandan bu harflerin müteşâbih mi yoksa muhkem mi olduğuyla ilgili de ihtilaflar olmuş; müteşâbihattan sayanlar tevilinden kaçınmaya çalışırken muhkem olduğunu düşünenler ise söz konusu harfleri tevil etmeye çalışarak konu ile ilgili çeşitli görüşler ileri sürmüşlerdir. Bu çalışmamızda, çeşitli kaynaklardan yararlanıp hurûf-u mukatta'anın kavramsal manaları, Kur'an'da geçtiği yerler, muhkem ve müteşâbih kavramlarıyla olan ilişkileri ve bu ilişki neticesinde tevilinin mümkün olup olmadığı, tevilini mümkün gören ve görmeyenlerin delilleri gibi konuları ele alarak okuyucuya derli toplu ve doyurucu bilgiler vermeye çalıştık.
