A Study on Plastic Bag Damage Prevention and Consumer Awareness

Abstract
Today, it is known that plastic bags cause harm to humans and animals, especially to the environment. The biggest threat is not the use of plastic, but the size of its use. In general, more than 50% of disposable plastics come from packaging, and most of them are shopping bags. Recognition of the lack of consumer awareness has led to controversy about garbage, and damage to the environment has required attention to plastic bags. There are a number of approaches established to address plastic shopping bags and international waste, and studies are being conducted in many countries. In this study, studies and legislations carried out in many countries in order to prevent damages of plastic bags have been examined. Production costs of plastic bags, long life, increase in diffusion and non-biodegradability seem to have negative effects on the environment and sustainable development. In addition, the “throwaway” approach resulting from rapid consumption makes sustainable consumption difficult. Therefore, separating consumer behaviour from the use of plastic bags is an important problem in the search for sustainable consumption, which is a pioneer in achieving sustainable development. It is known that sustainable consumption is provided by conscious consumers. In this study, measures that reduce the use of plastic bags and increase consumer awareness were compiled.
Özet
Günümüzde plastik poşetlerin özellikle başta çevreye olmak üzere insan ve hayvanlara verdiği zararlar bilinmektedir. En büyük tehdit, plastiğin kullanımı değil, kullanımının miktarıdır. Genel olarak, atılmış plastiklerin % 50'den fazlası ambalajdan gelir ve bunların çoğu alışveriş çantalarıdır. Tüketici farkındalığındaki eksikliğinin fark edilmesi, çöpler hakkında tartışmalara yol açmış ve çevrede oluşan zarar plastik poşetler hakkında önlem almayı gerektirmiştir. Plastik alışveriş torbalarının oluşturduğu çöplere ve uluslararası atıklara değinmek için kurulmuş bir takım yaklaşımlar ve bu konuda birçok ülkede yapılan çalışmalar mevcuttur. Bu çalışmada, plastik poşetlerin zararlarını önlemek adına birçok ülkede yapılmış çalışmalar ve mevzuatlar incelenmiştir. Plastik torbaların üretim enerji maliyetleri, uzun ömrü, çevrede yayılmasının artması ve biyo-bozunur olmaması çevre üzerinde ve sürdürülebilir kalkınmada olumsuz etkiler olarak görünmektedir. Bunun yanında, hızlı tüketim sonucu ortaya çıkan “kullan-at” yaklaşımı sürdürülebilir tüketimi zorlaştırmaktadır. Bu nedenle, tüketici davranışını plastik poşet kullanımından ayırmak, sürdürülebilir kalkınmanın sağlanmasında öncü olan sürdürülebilir tüketim arayışında önemli bir sorundur. Sürdürülebilir tüketim ise bilinçli tüketici ile sağlanır. Bu çalışmada; plastik poşet kullanımını azaltıcı önlemler ve tüketiciyi bilinçlendirmek adına yapılabilecekler anlatılmıştır.
