Abstract
The number of children who die from preventable diseases by vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is approximately 1,5 million. With increasing vaccine hesitancy in recent years, there is concern about this increase. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of the patients and their relatives who applied to Fırat University Hospital. In this cross-sectional study, at the entrance of Prof. Dr. M. Said Berilgen Polyclinics, the patients and their relatives who get information about the stand opened due to World Vaccine Week in 2018 were taken. 283 people were reached in the survey. 34.6% of the participants were women, 83.0% were married and 80.6% were children. 28.6% of the participants were primary school graduates, 27.1% were high school graduates. The question “Who is/are protected by the vaccine?”; 85.9% of those with high school or higher education level, 73.1% of those with secondary school or lower education level, have answered “me and society” and there is a statistically significant difference between them (p<0.05). Those who think that the Ministry of Health is enlightening the public about vaccines is 55.4% in the education level of the lower than high school, 38.7% of those with high school and above were statistically significant (p<0.05). 31.4% of the participants stated that vaccination should be left to the family's wishes. There is a need to increase awareness of the society about vaccines, to encourage the media and the Internet to provide more accurate information and to increase the audits.
