The relationship between depression and mentality in adolescents

Abstract
Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between depression and self-esteem in adolescents.Method: This research was carried out in descriptive and relational search design. The population of the study was 459 high school students studying in a district of the Ege Region during the 2013-2014 academic year. The Personal Information Form developed by the researchers and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDE) and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSBSE) were used to collect the data. In evaluating the data; percentages, averages, Pearson correlation analysis were used.Findings: The mean scores of Beck Depression Inventory total scores of students were found to be 13.35 ± 10.16 and Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory scores were found to be 35.98 ± 7.99. In the study, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between Beck Depression Inventory total score average and Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory total score (p <0.01). Conclusions: As a result of the study, it was determined that the students had low self-esteem and no tendency to depression. Depression levels of students were found to be related to self esteem.

Amaç: Bu çalışma ergenlerde depresyon ve benlik saygısı arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek amacıyla yapıldı. Yöntem: Bu araştırma tanımlayıcı ve ilişki arayıcı tasarımda gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın evrenini, 2013-2014 eğitim öğretim yılında Ege Bölgesinin bir ilçesinde öğrenim gören 459 lise öğrencisi oluşturdu. Verilerin toplanmasında araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen Kişisel Bilgi Formu ile Beck Depresyon Envanteri (BDE) ve Coopersmith Benlik Saygısı Envanteri (CSBSE) kullanıldı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde; yüzdelikler, ortalamalar, Pearson korelasyon analizi kullanıldı.Bulgular: Öğrencilerin Beck Depresyon Envanteri toplam puan ortalamaları 13.35±10.16, Coopersmith Benlik Saygısı Envanteri puan ortalamaları ise 35.98±7.99 olarak bulundu. Araştırmada Beck Depresyon Envanteri toplam puan ortalaması ve Coopersmith Benlik Saygısı Envanteri toplam puan ortalaması arasında istatistiksel olarak negatif yönde anlamlı ilişki olduğu bulundu (p<0.01). Sonuçlar: Araştırma sonucunda öğrencilerin benlik saygılarının düşük olduğu, depresyona eğilimlerinin olmadığı saptandı. Öğrencilerin depresyon düzeylerinin benlik saygıları ile ilişkili olduğu belirlendi.
