Abstract
Asound interpretation of Quran draws from the substantive and relative meanings of words in Quran. The specific meaning of the homonyms, i.e., those words that have multiple meanings, is likewise elemental to understanding the verses. The words in the verses are not isolated, or, independent from the context. As Quran attributes to the words synonymous or antonymous qualities, the meanings of cited words must be placed in context. The same synonym-antonym relationships also serve the appropriate tool to understand adalla and yudillu – the verbs attributed to God. In 21 of 33 verses, where God appears as the subject, there exists the opposite of hidaya, i.e., a word that means to “guide,” “lead to the right path,” and “bring to truth.” The antonym of hidaya is idlal, which means “not to guide,” “not to lead to the right path,” “not to bring to truth,” and “to leave one in astray.”
